First off, hello all. New here. I have been a dedicated bow hunter for about 20 years. Got a divorce awhile back, and sold my guns and bows off to pay for that. Got a chance to blast a big last weekend and that reawakened my hunting urges. I'm also using that as an excuse to buy a rifle.

The way I figure I'll never be able to afford a custom, so I was thinking Anahi's a barrled action in a B&C stock with this spare weaver fixed 4x scope in 30/06 would be a decent start to get back into firearms season. Living in Texas 30/06 should be capable of hunting any animals here baring exotics, but likely most of those to. I do have an old model 70 in .264 winchester mag, as I remember that thing was a death ray on white tails, but ammo is hard to get OTC, another reason I decided on 30/06. As far as the rifle, Howa is just one of those brands that to me always offered a decent product at a workable price.

Been giving the .308 and 6.5x55 allot of thought as well as .300 mag, but I figure for what the barrled action costs I can have all of them eventually right? Thanks guys and have a blessed day.

6.5x55 for nostalgia but seems like the ammo thing is setting in the back of your mind very heavily so 308

With that said ammo for the 264 win mag is as hard or easy as you want to make it.
Buy it online all day or even order via hendershot($$$ option). Next or better option is call Chad at Dallas reloads. Personally I think you have the best option already being the 264wm

You need this rifle HERE!

JK!! If you need some good 264 WM ammo, let me know. I can load most any .264" bullet for you. I have Winchester and Nosler 264 Win Mag brass on hand currently.

check out the Tikka rifles - new version this year is the t3x - and there are a lot of prior version t3 that are going for great prices.

on either ver of these rifles nothing is needed other than a scope & you cant beat the action or accuracy or trigger outside a $$$$ custom

I am shooting a t3x ultralight in 308 and it is a death ray rifle

Tikka T-3

.260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, .308, .30-06 Are all good choices.

My preferred do-it-all cartridge is the 7mm-08.

I've fired lots of rounds from all the ones in the list above, and the 7mm-08 is my top pick to handle every job. Lots of people say the same thing about a .30-06, but being a long action makes it have more powder, which makes it have more recoil.

This is the route I'd go for sure. The .264 is hard to beat, and since you already own it then it would make lots of sense to use it!

Is your rifle a pre-64?

There are plenty of great rounds but 308 Win is hard to beat for someone who doesn't reload and wants one hunting rifle for Texas.

I agree with you on the versatility of the 30-06. If you have to have one do it all cartridge for Texas or North America that is surely it including larger exotics if you buy the right bullets from Chad.

A 308 OR 270 I think would also be perfect hunting cartridges for Texas with lots of choices for each.

Lots of good guns out there. If Howa suits your eye then go for it. Its all about what makes you feel comfy cozy while holding it.

There you go. Then you can shoot 123 grain bullets at a whopping 2550fps. Deadly on anything from rats to mooses.

I agree with those who say to get Chad to load you up some 264 ammo, get a nice scope, and call it a day. From the sound of it, a couple hundred rounds would hold you over for years.

If you have GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), a Tikka T3x in 308 would be my choice. Tons of choices in ammo, both OTC and hand-loading. Less recoil than the 30-06 with basically the same performance for any reasonable purpose. Tikka will be accurate out of the box with good ammo.

If you're on a budget, Savage is a good option if you aren't going to wear it out at the range. Very accurate gun just like the Tikka.

Like others have said
1. Keep the 264
2. Get with Chad for some great loads
3. spend the $$$ you would have spent on another rifle to get the best optics you can.
4. shoot stuff.
