I consider it early, but depending on future rainfall and insects it is possible. I normally shoot for mid September for my wheat. Last year the army worms were so bad I didn't plant until mid October. They wiped out my neighbors wheat he planted in September.

Is there a rule-of-thumb regarding Army Worms in your area. Here is S.E. Louisiana if you plant before mid-September you run a good chance an Army Worm infestation will give you a bare field. Planting earlier is not always unsuccessful, but there's probably something like a 30-40% chance those hungry little buggers will feast on your young sprouts.

Young Gun, planting in mid-September (with rains) will have the deer starting to hit your crop in about 2-3 weeks. As soon as the first green shoots appear, they'll be on it. Depending upon the size of your plot, you could always plant half in September and the other half in October to stagger out the growth.

I think a better move would be to let the current weed seed bank sprout from next week's rain, then spray the new growth again in a month or so. You'll be well set up for planting in September.

Too early to plant. It'll be burned up by September. Don't let the 90 degree weather fool you. Once the high pressure dome moves back over Texas, we'll be back in the hundreds. Wait until mid september to plant oats or wheat.

Last year the army worms were so bad I didn't plant until mid October. They wiped out my neighbors wheat he planted in September. This, I always wait till after the 4th weekend in Sept due to worms, Grasshoppers and rainfall. I've seen worms and grasshoppers almost wipeout fields planted early Sept. Have also seen folks plant early, get a good rain get the wheat up and then it not rain for a month and the wheat burn up. I've always had good luck planting late. I drill about 40 acres for the deer.
