I have always sent soil samples to the lab twice a year about 4 to 6 week before planting but decided to find a field test kit so I could get results whenever I needed them and also learn something about the process. I purchased the Environmental Concept #1163 Kit from Harris Seeds, and it looks like it will work.

I just read through the instructions and want to go back through it again, and then I will retake the samples that I just received back from the lab to see how my results compare. The kit with shipping was $30.90, and it will perform 80 samples (the number of little cotton filters). The Harris Seed page said 20 tests, but it is the #1663 kit with 80. Environmental Concepts offers three kits with either 40, 80, or 200 filters. The tests have been costing me $10 to $13 depending on who does them, and 80 test from the kit will be less than 39¢ each. Money was not the issue for me; it is more about learning something and applying it to what I enjoy working with.

I'll be eager to hear your results. I did not realize there was a DIY option. Thanks for passing on.

You haven't left a review on the Harris website or here. I bought one anyway.

There's only 2 seasons in a year. Deer season and getting ready for deer season.

I will be using the kit this month as I plant as close as I can get to September 18th. I also plan on sending samples to the lab from the same soil that I collect so that I can compare the results to those that I come up with the kit.

Got my soil testing kit in yesterday. Will try it out this weekend. I've usually had pretty good food plots when the weather cooperates but there's always room for improvement.

Well I tried my kit the other day. Found my pH is OK (6.5) but nitrogen and phosphorus is depleted. Will add high N and P fertilizer.
