I have a friend looking at an after deer season lease just north of Dickens, anyone here hunt that area last year? I have never hunted the area at all.

I hunted NW of Dickens several years ago. Pre drought it was pretty good. I don't have any recent info but most of the rest of that area has come back strong.

Silver spurs and gold tequila
keep me hanging on.
Pretty girls and old cantinas
give me shelter from the storm.

If the country isn't too thick to hunt, I bet it will be a pretty good place. Some of the best quail hunting in Texas is on the Pitchfork Ranch not too far from there.

I personally love that area in the past. I know nothing about it nowadays.

We hunted about 30 miles due east of there the last two years and that ranch was as good as any I have hunted. The same ranch in 2009-2011 you could not find a four bird covey if your life depended on it. If they get enough rain and the ranch is not overgrazed you should have high hopes if you get the lease.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

Last year we had a lease just east of dickens as well as a lease just north of spur in dickens county. We were finding 25 coveys a day on average. As someone said above if we get decent rain and we get decent rain and the rancher doesn't over graze it's could be very good again this year.

Great area. You can't fail if it's not over grazed.

Like other guys said, I day leased a place for a couple of years and it was fantastic. It changed hands and I convinced the new owner to let us hunt, but he was running a head of cattle per 5 acres and when I showed up in December I drove right past it because it looked like a different pasture. Only other thing is some parts can have some rocky spots and tough on your dogs pads, especially going toward Macadoo.

My place is 10 miles north northeast of Dickens. Been fantastic for the last 2 years. So far we've had 18 inches of rain since January. Had 3 inches in the last 3 weeks. Not seeing a lot of babies but I have at least 4 coveys of 15 or more on my 160 acres. expect another great year unfortunately lost my Maggie My hunting buddy last month. Picking up a new baby on 8/30 so we'll be out of real action till next year

Just talked to my buddy, him and a few others in our group went and looked at the place yesterday and really like it so we are getting on it. 8,000 acres with 3 bedroom house. It's after deer season only but my buddy has another place 10 miles south of it that I can go as a guest in December. Pictures I saw of the place show it is very green out there right now. Hope it turns out to be a good lease, I've never hunted up that way.

I have hunted just south of Spur. Watch out for that bad a$$ cactus up there....the kind that will jump out and get you. It will take a dog down and then get all in their mouth when he bites it. We started carrying the steel pick combs in our vest to grab it with when it stuck to a dog. Then you and a buddy have to hold the dog down to get it out of their mouth. It will shut a hunt down for 30 minutes at least.

Quick Public Service Announcement...,

Don't grab the Cholla Cactus with your bare hands if it is stuck to you or your dog.Take a set of heavy leather work gloves with you or use a steel pick comb to grab it. Bad, bad, stuff and it is painful. My best friend got hit by it on a hunt one time and he was in the hospital that night with some reaction to it i.e. Sweats and hallucinations. That was a fun night trying to find a doctor in remote Panhandle region.
