We eat a lot of feral hogs and deer. I like them both. On the hogs we usually only eat the sows and have no problem throwing any of them on the gut pile to feed the scavengers.

Hell no I'm not even gonna touch one of those nasty things. Treat em just like a coyote and gut shootem so I don't have to drag them off........Why would you eat one with the cheap price of pork?

We keep them on ice for a few days and then into a brine for another 24 hours. Put them on the pit and they were very good.

We eat them all. Some may be tougher than others but I've never eaten one that I thought was bad. Usually roasts, ground meat and carne guisada type stuff out of them.

That is the main reason I learn to hunt. No where to buy wild pig meat.

We eat a LOT of wild pork. At least a couple of times a week. If the freezer gets low, I go pop another one or two. It's all how you cook it. food

Wow, taking a poke at legal hunters because you don't like how they hunt legally?
I don't care how they hunt, I think the wasting of an edible animal because you can is a mentality. What's the difference? You kill an edible animal and throw it away, what makes the other animal any different? The law and antlers, that's what. People throw them out because they can, if it were legal to do deer that way people would. I don't care what anybody does it's not my concern but let's not kid ourselves.

cmc, that's interesting. I don't know a single person that ever wasted a deer that was found while it was still edible. Personally, I do waste large stinking boars, but not the 'good eating' kind.

I did observe a kid gut shoot a doe many years ago, and he didn't even try to track it, but walked off. He didn't know I was there, so when he left I tracked th doe, found it, took it home and skinned it. Dad made me call him and take him some of the meat. I did, but the kid deserved nothing.

Does wasting a corn thieving raccoon count?

Antibiotics, growth hormones etc. I would always prefer my meat wild.

Steve let me try one of these at the Hunters Challenge and it was amazing up

I'd personally rather eat wild meat than store bought meat. All the steroids, hormones, and antibiotics they pump into the heards of cows, pigs, and chickens you buy at the store is probably the reason we've had such a sharp increase in cancer and heart disease over the last 20-30 years.

I agree.

The property where I hunt the most belongs to an long time friend. He has also, in the past, leased out hunting rights to bow hunters. The first time I met them (the bow hunters) I was out on the tractor mowing in August and they were out scouting the territory. We both stopped and chatted a while. The landowner had told them that he and I would continue to hunt hogs. That was part of their lease contract. He had assured them we would leave the deer alone, but I got the feeling they were concerned that we might shoot deer at feeders they were maintaining when they weren't around. They asked (somewhat incredulously) why we didn't hunt deer.

I replied that there were three main reasons:
1) My wife doesn't think the hogs are cute.
2) I prefer the taste of feral pork to venison.
3) There's only so much room in the freezer.

Those are all still true for me, and to that I'd add the fact mentioned above that I can hunt them year-round. This doesn't necessarily preclude anyone from going after venison during deer season, but it's just not my preference. YMMV.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

Most of my family didn't either....until I told them what it was after they raved about it after eating it!

My Aunt was the most vocal, "I'm never gonna eat one of those nasty things" until she ate some when I cooked for the family reunion a couple years ago.....this last reunion she was standing there when we pulled it off the pit to "help get it ready"....I think she ate more than she put in the pan.....

We are fortunate that at our place the pigs look like they just escaped from the farm. We call them HEB pigs, because the meat is as good (or better) than grocery store pork. We shoot the 20-50 pounders all of the time. I got tired of cleaning them all for everyone that wanted them, so they get fed to the buzzards more now.

Any pig less than 150 lbs is coming home with me. ANything over may or may not make to the freezer. I have zero problems with folks who let them lie were they die or drag them to the gut pile. God knows we have enough of them to make everyone happy.
