Hi new to the forum, met Fred at Cabela's and he told me about this forum and that I should sign up.
My name is Kevin and I have bought hunting licenses for the last two years but never could sync my and my co-workers schedules up so I mostly shoot paper at Elm Fork. I am the guy that has all the rifles with wood on them but for the most part no optics......and they are a little older them most. I collect and shoot Military Surplus firearms and I am very new to reloading. This brings me to my questions on some low power reloading for some in 7x57 Spanish (Mauser)

Does anyone use the the below bullets in reloading older Spanish 1893s and or Rolling Blocks in 7mm?

Hornady InterLock Bullets 284 Caliber, 7mm (284 Diameter) 175 Grain Spire

How about Lyman #287308 162gr cast?

One of my 1893's looks to have a groove diameter of .2855 and the bore at .279 if I measured the slug right. It did not shoot to well with Remington Coreloks or the two PPUs I shot out of it.

I had read that the S&B SPCE I think 173g SP do well in the older Spanish mausers (not the Rolling blocks) so I have some on order.

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks,
Kevin

Be really careful with the rolling blocks. They have a reputation for sudden unexpected failure. I'd pass on them, myself.

All of the early military rifles were made with oversize grooves to keep pressure down with the long round nose bullets . The best bullet is the old Hornady 175 rn , if you can find them . If not , use the longest bearing surface bullet with an open flat base you can find . Also a lover velocity with a faster burning powder will help " bump " up the bullet to seal the rear . The old rolling blocks will bend the pin and start to lock up [ went pushed too hard ] before a " sudden failure .

The rifle in the other discussion is a 1867 model black powder rifle , that is a different design and 30 years older than the NO 5 smokeless steel 7mm rifle being talked about here .
