Was on Ft Hood checking some game cameras and while walking up to the feeder I see something moving about 30 ft up in a large oak tree. At first I thought raccoon but then I seen the bushy tail and realized it was a Gray Fox. It ran down the tree and jumped from about 10 ft up and hauled are. I didn't even know they could climb trees much less be that high up in a tree. Anyone else ever seen a Gray up in a tree?

They get on my neighbors' roofs with some regularity. They are pretty good climbers.

Google says they're the only American canid that climbs trees. I didn't know that.

Posted about my experience last year and included photo of Fox that climbed 12' ladder up to my blind - while I was in it - during bow season. He appeared to be a pretty good climber!

When running them with dogs they'll tree pretty fast, but if the tree is too small they'll jump when they see you coming and take the dogs with them again. Makes for a long night when you're trying to tree coons. Shot one out of the 4th tree of the night once. I didn't care to kill a grey, but he was wearing me and the dogs out. Never minded my dogs being gritty and not coming off a tree until I leashed them until that night.

I had a grey that would climb the mulberry tree outside of my office. He would go 20 feet up. I never figured out if he was after the mulberries or the birds that loved them. That fox also loved bread.
I have seen them climb the HF several times.

Sapper, I've seen one climb the big Liveoak at Chris' stand. They can jump very high. Never killed one. No interest. Too much fun watching them.

Saw one in our subdivision last weekend. With very few people trapping these days, their numbers are likely exploding.

Yes, first one I ever saw was in the tree in our front yard when I was about five. Made himself right at home. Dad ended his chicken thief tendencies with a .22 short to the head.

I have also seen a Grey fox in a tree. It was about 35 years ago. Sleeping in a big fork in a native pecan tree. It was cold December day and I was bow hunting. The fox was 9'-10' off the ground and let me walk right under it without spooking. Have seen a bunch of them since but that is the only one that was up a tree. Cool to see.
