Been thinking about getting a 1911. Anybody done one from a kit? Good ideas? Bad idea?

Built several 1911, but not from a 80% kit. Not sure what is left to machine on the frame. I would think that what needs to be cut, will depend on the tools you need. Best advice i can give is to be careful, or you will end up like me on my first one, i spent enough money in parts to buy 3 complete factory built guns!

those 1911 kits plus tooling are north of $1k - some very nice 1911 could be had for that

I have worked with a couple of 80% AR lowers and while it was interesting and proved the point it could be done there was no saving money just satisfaction of doing it. The cost of tools and jigs add up quick we had most of the tools so our cost was the jig and we split that two ways. Plus you have created an item for "personal use" and it cannot be sold or given to anyone else. Not a $$$ saving activity for sure.
