I planted some iron and clay cowpeas and got a spring mix from Turner that included cowpeas, lab lab, soybeans, sunn hemp, peas, buckwheat, okra and chicory. The iron and clay were in the ground for a couple weeks before the mix. So far, so good!

Funny thing about this field (1.5 acres) is that it was plowed accidentally. We just finished a 3 year project of clearing and root plowing 20+ acres and converting them to native grasses. This field was just grass. My step father in law got mixed up in my directions and plowed this field. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I always wanted to plant this area. This was also the first field my grandfather tried to plant a food plot, of sorts, over 30 years ago. The seeds never really took then, so he abandoned the idea. Decades later, it is growing well. Will make this a seasonal plot.

Are the deer hammering it? Looks pretty lush, maybe like the animals haven't found it?? Plenty of clipped ends on plants?
Looks good though. That'll be me next spring/summer. Will have several seasonal plots starting this fall.

Looks great I wanted to do one this year! Would y'all say it is too late to try one this season?

Deer have hit it, but not hammering it...yet. Lots of tops have been chewed on. There is a ton of good forage around here, so this may last a while. Will see how that goes.

Update: deer HAMMERED the iron and clay cowpeas. The spring mix that was planted a little later is still standing, but I think it will be gone soon. We also have a few wayward cattle that have found their way onto our place, and they have found the deer snacks recently. Looking to turn these over to fall plots - when do you guys make the move to seeding for fall? Looks like some folks have already done some discing. What are y'all planting this fall?

I planted soybeans about the same time, it rained for about 10 minutes the next day then it never rained good since I planted. Still looks like the day I planted except with more dust.
