Why does "any chance whatsoever of kids being in the home demands all firearms be behind lock and key." I believe that is now Texas law.
That certainly wasn't the case when I was growing up, and it's not the case with my kids. I don't leave them out in the open within easy reach, But I don't leave them hidden away like some forbidden taboo objects. My 4 year old already has a good idea about how to behave around guns, but I'm not stupid. She's 4, I'm not going to leave loaded guns out on the table. But up on top of my wardrobe where she can't reach is my carry gun, and I have a gun cabinet that while tough to open isn't locked up with a key.
To answer the OPs question, carry gun is always loaded, shotgun in the gun cabinet is loaded with one in the chamber, hunting rifle is loaded with nothing in the chamber. Other guns are usually loaded with nothing in the chamber or unloaded completely.
Yep, things have changed and laws have changed. I too have taught my children about gun safety and they are not taboo. [/quote] That law is only in effect if the child discharges the firearm. It's not illegal to have firearms near a kid. Unless they gain access and discharge it. Like I said, for us personally, they are out of reach, and a lot of them ARE locked up, but not just because I have kiddos around.
The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference. -George Washington

A couple of handguns are loaded with a round in the chamber, one shotgun is loaded with an empty chamber. Three loaded magazines are sitting directly above an empty AR. I'm the only one that's ever opened my safe. My two grown children have instructions on how to open the safe along with what's loaded if something were to happen to me.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

All guns in safe are unloaded actions open. Only exception is a pistol safe bolted to the side of my bed, in which both pistols are loaded with spare mags.

rifles unloaded and decocked. I keep a 44 mag revolver loaded and a half loaded mag for an ar in the safe. I have my concealed carry pistols load but I rotate them so it just depends on what I am going to carry for the week.

Semi-auto pistols have loaded magazines, but the chambers are empty. The revolvers are unloaded except my CCW and it has never been in the safe. Rifles are unloaded, but those with detachable magazines have loaded mags nearby. I don't anticipate using a center-fire rifle in the house.

No kids home. In safe unloaded, in house one auto loaded and one revolver loaded with rat shot for the snakes.

Hunting firearms are always unloaded unless shooting or hunting. Fighting firearms are ready to go 24/7.

Crime is not much of a problem in the small community I live in but I guess you never know. The good stuff is kept unloaded in a safe. I do however keep a loaded shotgun in the bedroom. My 17 year old son has one in his room as well. On the slim chance someone tried to enter our home uninvited it would be a big mistake if we were home.

I keep every handgun in the house loaded and ready to rock, in the safe or not. Long guns distributed throughout the house are loaded too...they're distributed throughout the house for a reason. I do not keep rifles in the safe loaded.

I dont keep any guns loaded in the house. I dont live in Afghanistan. I live in a nice, low-crime area. If that ever changes then Ill move. Am i as prepared as everyone else on this thread, no. But are my chances of an AD/ND lower then everyone else on this thread, yes. My guns are stored with mags and ammo so they can be ready in 1-2 seconds. Its a personal choice and risk I've chosen to take.
Buzz, i know where you live. Only crime happening in your neighborhood is people cheating at bingo night or not counting strokes on the golf course.

I only keep the guns at the house that are for home defense loaded and put in adult accessible safes around the house. No other weapons get live ammo in them anywhere other than the range or hunting.

I store an AR with a full magazine/open bolt, a pistol with loaded magazine/chamber empty and what stays on my nightstand is loaded/chambered and ready to go.

I don't store anything in the safe with a loaded mag or chamber.
So normally I leave everything in the safe unloaded. For some reason I can't remember, I left a loaded mag in a 1911, chamber empty. A buddy came over and I wanted to show her off. As all good safe shooters do, I pull the slide back slightly, spot an empty chamber, let it go back into battery, return to LR and hand her over. Buddy asks, is she loaded? I tell him no, I checked, but check it anyway. He racks the slide and a round flys out.
Not worth the risk IMHO

All pistols are always loaded, and only one is in the safe. Everyone in my house, including my 9 year old daughter who shoots a lot, knows our pistols are always loaded. Long guns in the safe are unloaded. Ithaca 37 above the closet door, loaded. Rifles that are out for hunting/defense purposes usually have a loaded mag but empty chamber.

Everything is technically loaded.
But one rifle and one pistol is always loaded in the safe. Accidents don't happen with loaded firearms, just negligence.
