This weekend I will be in Gonzales with my hunting buddy, Shorty Gorham at the American Freestyle Bullfighting. While I have been around rodeos all my life, I must say that a cowboy going "mano y mano" with a Mexican fighting bull goes to a new level of excitement. If you are in the area and wondering what to do this weekend, I can highly recommend this event. Adios, Gary

The heat index was 103 when I arrived at the J. B. Wells arena and I was wondering if anyone would show up and battle the heat. By the time it started, a good crowd had gathered and I was sweating from just moving around and setting up cameras. I was whining to my buddy, Phil Lyne about the heat and he reminded me that it could get a lot worse if I wanted to climb over the fence and let them cut one of those "Lights Out Fighting Bulls" on your tail. It was a great event with LOTS of action. Adios, Gary

Gary, it reminds me of my mentor Clyde Dobson. We were hunting coons and an old bull was bellowing in the distance. I started mocking that old bull and Mr. Dobson whacked me accross the backside with is cain and a few explivitives added as he hurried through the nearest fence. I was lollygagging around on the other side laughing, still mocking that old bull in the distance. I mocked him once more as Clyde was cussing me, but this time that bull was about 50 feet behind and closing fast. You talk about clearing a 5 strand barbed wire fence in a hurry, man I got through just in time. Clyde took that Cain and swatted me again just for good measure as soon as I was able to get to my feet. That bull was non to happy about us being there.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

All this reminded me when I was in HS. The old boy I ran with was a bare back rider, used to go to rodeos and pull his riggn, and some times get a buck out. Anyways his brother was a PRCA clown ( well that's what they called them in those days )And then he clowned at the Mesquite rodeo most every weekend. He was a hell of a bullfighter. Fond memories!!!

Yes Sir, Mexico fighting bulls. The bulls that they are using are from "Lights Out Fighting Bulls", Uvalde, TX. These cattle were purchased from some of the best fighting stock in Mexico and are now being raised on the Light Ranch. I think they have about 150 cows from fighting stock and several of the really top producing fighting bulls that they are breeding them to. If they can improve the cattle similar to what they have done with the bucking bulls, there will be a lot more wrecks and crippled cowboys... Adios, Gary
