Need some thoughts on a sealant for shotgun stock. I have read about linseed oil, tung oil, birchwood casey finish oil, etc.... I have stained it and have the color I want but I do not want a shiny finish. I want it to look like it does right now with no sheen to it. So any ideas or what have y'all done to yours? Thanks in advance!!

Truoil works good, lightly sand it with 0000 steel wool when you are done to knock a lot of sheen of of it. You could also try an aerosol matte clear coat. I'd test that on some scrap wood. But I've used it on painted synthetic stocks a ton.

caribou - what type of paint do you use on synthetic stocks? Been considering doing a camo paint job on my Tikka varmint stock.

Krylon fusion has done well for me in the past. It's made to bond with plastic.

I rubbed linseed oil on one once and baked. It slightly darkened it. No sheen, I like it.

BLO should do what you are looking for. It has really made the grin "POP" on a few stocks that I have worked up for friends.

Are you going to pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?

If you want a true sealant you need a polyurethane type finish. Oil finishes, especially when lightly applied aren't waterproof.

Unless you plan on taking it swimming with you, oil is plenty good. Poly is better for water resistance, but oil is just fine.
