My uncle had one, that was one of the best "bird" dogs. Never trained, just picked it up on his own.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. They are one of the smartest breeds.

Maggie is a Jack of all trades but her passion is anything water. One warning! OK actually there's several but this is the main one. These little dog's are absolutely fearless and can get themselves in trouble easily, especially around a bigger dog. Chew toy's! Make sure they have plenty and make sure they're built to last. Other than that all I can say is brace yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwggq3jMxfU

that's what I had planned when I got mine, was easy to train to blood trail, but there is no OFF switch, mine will kill anything she can get a hold of. she took off through the woods, was 4 hours before she came back, the smartest dog have ever had, in the house she will obey every command, taught her to open dresser drawers, out side it balls to the walls, but have seen and heard that others can be managed.

We rescued ours from a shelter. She is the smartest dog I have ever owned and has a personality like I have never seen. She does have an "off switch" ..she is recharging her batteries....lol....

we have had two, both females ... one was one of the best dogs we have ever owned, smart, gentle inside, obeyed well, learned tricks, but as others stated, fearless and hard to call her off when she was in attack mode, only barked if something was out of line or she saw something outside, she had an off switch when inside, not so sure about outside, died at about 5 y/o due to congestive heart failure. She was a sweetheart, loved everyone, got along with other dogs and even cats (she tormented them but was fairly gentle with them).
We got another one based on the experience with the first, totally different demeanor as this one had no off switch, could not (or did not) have any desire to learn, chewed anything she could get her teeth on, barked relentlessly 24/7 inside or out, we referred to her as the devil dog. she was not sweet, had an attitude and would try to attack and/or kill anything she saw. She got hit by a car one night chasing a deer after I let her out of her crate to use the bathroom, vanished into the darkness. My wife couldn't stand this dog, high strung doesn't even begin to describe her.

Yeah, those things can certainly be hard to handle. My buddy had one that tore into an armadillo once when we had it out in the woods. Actually worked out well for everyone but the armadillo as it took it like an hour to finally chew through that armor and kill it. Wore itself out pretty good.
Ended up getting stomped to death by a donkey. Because somehow it didn't read the warning signs of an angry donkey charging it.

Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

This post makes me sad. Lost mine the week before Christmas. His name was Wilson. Smart but fearless. Got cut twice by a hog. He left the house late that afternoon with my bigger dog, she came home but no Wilson. I'll guarantee you he went out in a blaze of glory! Still miss the little feller. Damn hogs!

I got my first jack Russell about twenty years ago and since then between the litters I've had I've owned about 50 total. Some for years some from the litters just long enough to be weaned. I don't believe there is a dog that has more heart and intelligence than a JR. The pros outway the cons IMO but know that they are not a lazy mans dog. They want things to do and will do anything for you but don't let them make the decisions or you'll have a mess. One thing that I have noticed in the couple we had that were over ten years old it's not that uncommon for them to just leave one day. I've had this happen more than once and don't know why and I've talked to other JR owners that said the same thing happened to them. Six months ago my 13 year old male Easton who had lived in this house for 10 years and never really tried to leave before, he got up off the couch walked right passed all of us and went out the dog door and never came back. I still to this day don't know how he got out or why but it has happened before with older JRs. I'm done with dogs for awhile but if I ever get another it will be a JR. Good luck on your adventures and I promise your dog will teach you as much as you teach him.

I have one, his name is J-Russ. He's similar to everyone elses descriptions. Wide open outside and a when inside he's either on someones lap or sitting on the window watching for anything to move outside. Can't be trusted to listen when he's after something.

I want one. I have a rat terrier and they are very similar. he is 14 when he passes I plan to get a Jack Russel. I have seen them in Africa and they are without a doubt the smartest fearless dog out there.

Best kid dog I've had, not big enough to trample my 18 month old but is known to rob food out of his hand. They are pals for sure.
