my greenbrier is always chopped off at the ends from the deer chowing on it. I have some areas where it is out of control and needs cut back but not many, the deer love it

I planted spineless prickly pear on my place near Camp Wood and the deer loved it. Too much in fact, I had to fence patches of it in to keep them from eating it to the ground. Provides some moisture in the dry times too. The javalina would eat the stuff down low but it tends to grow tall if it gets enough water.

Huh. That's an interesting idea for places too dry for traditional food plots.

You just take one of the pads and stick the scarred end into the ground. That's it. If you water them they will take off quicker but you don't have to. A lot of places use spineless prickly pear for landscaping in town. You can ask them if they will let you snap off a few pads or you can buy them on the internet.

You do need to cover them with a cage while they are small or they will get eaten, mainly by jackrabbits.

Kidneywood and Goldenball Leadtree are usually available at native texas nurseries and are excellent browse. You'll need to fence them off for a couple of years until the get established. Leadtree is easily grown from seeds. I haven't had as much luck with growing kidneywood from seeds, but supposedly it's not hard to get them going either.
