My wife and I are looking at a property in Wood County and need some advice. I'm not a particularly skilled or knowledgeable hunter, but I can shoot straight, have killed 8-10 whitetails, and I'm looking to really develop my skills. This property is in central Wood county, and has a nice cabin, so my wife would enjoy it as a get-away. Partly wooded and part pasture, with mostly just one hunter -- me. I"m not a trophy hunter at this point, just want some venison in the freezer, but I noticed that Wood County limits you to one buck and one spike, which makes me think the population isn't that great. Anyway, would you guys recommend Wood county for whitetails?

I would. Close to lake Fork too. Nice bonus. Many counties are similar. I think Wood has doe days around Thanksgiving. New regs aren't out yet. Some very nice bucks killed every year in Wood. Go burn up some shoe leather and check it out.

I've hunted in Wood County for a long time. Having grown up at my grandparents on Lake Hawkins during the summers and spending Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays out there. Wood County has some very good deer killed out there every year. But there is the doe only weekend of Thanksgiving. However when I was a kid you couldn't kill a doe at all in the county so only in the last 16 or 17 years did that change and we've seen a huge increase in deer population.

I hunt whitetails out in Hawkins in Wood County. Last year was a slow year for me only having taken a spike and a doe during youth opener with my niece. With that being said I have had good luck in the past years and brought some big WT home to fill the fridge. And as stated before, if you don't have the permit you are only allowed to take a doe on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of thanksgiving weekend; or at least that what it was last year. We have property near Golden in Wood County and deer numbers and quality of antlers were really poor before AR's started. The deer numbers have increased in our area as well as the quality of bucks. Tons of pigs in our area.
