i haven't been by there in a while and stopped to pick
up a couple of small things for an upcoming camping trip.
it looked like there was less stuff on the shelves than
i have here in the storage shed. j.f.g. i went down the
aisle where some of the year-round hunting stuff is, figuring
that maybe they might have put out the fall stuff for the
dove opener. nope, no go.
hopefully they aren't headed the way of oshmans. i did
notice on the way out that there didn't look like any
shortage of workout and casual clothes in stock.
oshmans ? ? ? damn i hope not

yes it is. but i can remember when they were cullum & boren sporting goods,
and had quite a lot of guns and fishing and hunting gear and camping stuff.
then when they became oshman's, they still had quite a bit of outdoor gear,
but the gaming stuff started to come in, and slowly started taking over the
store. before long, they had a huge selection of sports bras and jockstraps,
and not so many fishing lures and rifle scopes. the gaming stuff finally took
over, then oshman's folded up like a wet newspaper. the big "new" building
they moved into from town east mall adjacent to where academy is has been a
church for quite some time. (or the church sign is still there if the church is gone)

i was hoping that academy isn't going down that same road with the gaming
crap and cutting back on the outdoor gear. if they do, the building will
eventually be a cricket farm and spider web factory like the old oshman's was.

An investment group based in New York City bought Academy 2011 and the consequences are showing.

ok.
I can believe that.
unfortunately, that's happening all over the U.S. with
every kind of company you can think of. they buy it out,
bring in their own execs and "buyers" that know nothing in
the least about the products or services they produce and/or
sell, then run the place into the ground in a decade or less.
they've got the degree, so they must know what they're doing, right?
I've seen it happen firsthand, and it always ends up the same.
former big thriving business with knowledgeable employees gets
turned into a cricket farm and spider web factory.

They are opening new stores all the time, just opened one in Weatherford.

Perhaps the Mesquite store isn't worth keeping?

I doubt this is the case. The Mesquite store stays packed with folks.

I hear this about the mesquite store only. My academy's in the mid cities area are always stocked to the gills on guns ammo and fishing and hunting equipment.

Ive been noticing this for the last two years. They seem to be slowly moving away from stuff. The hunting and fishing selection isnt what it used to be. I cant even get steel leader making material there! They also seem to be selling more amd more stuff that is lacking in the quality department.

Went to the Weatherford store 2 weeks after it opened and the fishing baits were 1/3 gone and out of almost all of the popular items. I decided I'm done wasting time going to an Academy store, I'll just order online.

My comments had nothing to do with the mesquite location. I regularly frequent 3 locations in the north west Houston area.

If Academy is on the decline, Dick's Sporting Goods/Field and Stream will fill the void. I finally visited one today, and liked what I saw.

Might have something to do with the new one that just opened in Rockwall.

The academy on north tarrant in Keller just expanded. They have a massive hunting and fishing area. And it's NICE!
