It's not just what they eat in fields of grain or cotton. They cut escape trails through the fields that are several hundred yards long. When crops are about six inches tall look over the fields and you can see these trails.

According to the below link, they say 41 jack rabbits to one cow. Not to bad until you look at population density possiblies of 400 jacks to ever 640 acres. eek2

With high densities they really cut make huge impact on AU's

And in this country running 20 head per section is only on a good year.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Jackrabbits and prairie dogs were the animals that I honed shooting skills on as a kid. Both critters are a detriment to livestock production, so my dad and grandpa always made sure I had plenty of ammo. Even so, they were almost impossible to make a dent in their numbers.

My grandfather ran around 400 momma cows and never let us shoot Kaci rabbits or cottontails.
He firmly believed that when the rabbits were thick the coyotes ate them and left the calves alone.
Wealways shot every coyote we saw.

Interesting that you brought that up! It just dawned on me that I've never seen a wild rabbit Jack or cottontail drinking water at any of the ponds. I know they will drink when available from puddles in the road and pretty sure they get the majority of fluids from the vegetation they consume.

X2! Never seen either drink at a tank myself!

They are plenty in Midland county, we can usually get out and pop 30 in one night on a high-rack, great target practice, if anyone knows a good recipe please share- been looking to cook/fry some of the meat!

The crockpot is your friend. I've cooked a few, and they were pretty decent after being slow cooked for awhile.

I had no idea that jackrabbits could be called in, or that a video about hunting them could be so dramatic.

I enjoyed seeing natures up and down swings in wildlife at the ranch.

One year the Jacks, Cottontails, Packrats, Prairie Dogs and Quail hit all hit their peek.....I am talking CRAZY numbers. A small covey of Blue Quail was 50 birds and large coveys were 100 bird(They turned the sky black). We would shoot at the quail and rabbits would explode in every direction distracting us trying follow up shots. Walking through the brush we would almost trip over them!

I have a picture of my friend reaching down and picking up a rabbit from under a bush. This friends wife liked cotton tails so he walked a circle outside the edge of camp about 50-60 yards out and shot 10 in very short order.

During this time the predator population(coyotes, bobcats, hawks, owls, badgers, snakes etal) grew tremendously! Grounds owls were everywhere, hawks were dive bombing quail and rattle snakes were in the trees over the packrat nests(yes I have a picture).

The next year the plague hit and the rodent numbers plummeted. One year later you could drive the whole ranch and not see but 5-6 rabbits.

Dang, I thought a recurve and a judo point were plenty good enough for jackrabbits.

I have to say that the most enjoyable hunt I've ever went on was with my brother. We went out to my place and hunted cottontails with the bow's, we got a ton of them and had a blast. Yes we did lose same damn nice arrows in the deal also. I machined some flat washers that would screw in behind a field tip, they had a 5/8 ths OD and would flatten a cottontail.

If your talking 04/05, we had the same thing at our Quail lease south of Sterling. There were quail & rabbits everywhere.

I will swear to this being a true story under oath. While going to West Texas State ,
Canyon Tx. in 1973, A friend put me on a piece of property that was infested and the landowner wanted some cleared out. I took my 788 rem in 22-250 out for a session.
I set up under a mesquite tree and started glassing, I could see a half dozen from
where I sat. I proceeded to reduce that number. One particular rabbit did not explode,
I thought I missed, When I put the scope back on it , It wobbled and fell over.
Now I am curious, I walked down to the victim , and found it intact. Under closer inspection, I found where the bullet had cut hair ( no pun intended) right down to the
skin on it shoulder. It Did not draw blood . No blood anywhere on the animal.
I don't if it had a stroke, died of old age , or did the 55 gr bullet at 3000 fps passing that close have a fatal result.
Don't know , but it is a true story , believe it or not , don't bother me none. smile

When you grow up in Odessa there's not much to do. I remember many nights shooting a brick of 22's just to watch them die. I would be willing to guess I killed way over 10,000 jackrabbits by age 18, conservatively. I've even had some great "Dates" killing rabbits. Back then I knew enough people to have over 200,000 acres to quail, varmint, and rabbit hunt on anytime I wanted to. Sparrows are a great way to learn with a BB gun but nothing will hone your skills shooting running game like jackrabbits with a 22.

In high school my grandparents lived in the Sandhills and my grandmother always stayed up late. Many nights my buddies would want to drive by Nanna's house and see if the kitchen light was still on. If it was we could stop in and she'd cook us breakfast after a night of drinking beer and killing rabbits. There was always plenty of room on the floor to sleep at Nan's house.

Did you catch the part where they said they killed 6 thousand JR's in one section! That's more than one per square yard. I'm having a hard time buying that one.

Between Mentone and Kermit the other night, just on one side of the road, I counted over 300 jacks in about 10 miles. Just what I could see in the headlights in my bar ditch. I just quit counting.

6000 jacks/640 acres = ~9 jacks per acre?
