Saw this about a guy in the Lubbock area getting bit.. Snakebite article The surprising thing to me was what they said not to do, which are most of the things I would have done. I carry a snake bite kit in my pack, that is to do these very things as well. Is it time to pitch it?

I saw an article once that had a list of things to do if you get bit. Every other item on the list was "Stay Calm."
1. Stay Calm. 2. Call or drive for help. 3. Stay Calm 4. If possible, get a picture of the snake for identification. Do not try to kill the snake and bring it to the hospital with you. 5. Stay Calm...
And so on. Basically, don't do anything but keep your heart rate down and get to the hospital.

Yeah, toss the kit, identify the snake if possible, and get to the ER. The snake ID is important because the antivenoms are specific. I had my dad at the ER for a health issue so I was poking around in our little ER and saw the antivenom cabinet. Everything ID'd by the snake. They also said it makes it tougher for them if the snake is not known. I guess in urban areas where exotics are not that unusual, it gets even tougher because someone will come in and say they were bitten by their pet cobra but the antivenom is subspecies specific and the wrong subspecies venom can kill you. Another reason not to have a pet snake.
While my dad and I were at the ER, darn if some dude didn't come in with a bite. He was in a bad way. I don't think they dropped everything and headed for the ER. They took him straight to ICU. So, I asked my doc how many snake bites they see a year. He said 12 to 18. That number surprised me.

80 dose of antivenom, could be close to half a million dollar bill.
In Sri Lanka, its $30 a vile by snake , somethings off hear.
If a man were smart (or dumb) he would start a venom collecting business.

I'm only aware of two being carried, CroFab for all North American Vipers and Coralmyn for Coral Snakes.

I was watching a TV show about the snakes in Sri Lanka, They said the most poisonous snakebites than anywhere else. Cobras, Kraits, Gaboon Vipers and a bunch of others. Rice and tea are the major crops and these snakes thrive.
They have an anti venom by each species and can be bought for $25-$35 a vile.
Here the CroFab is $30,000 per vile or something crazy like this. There are two others made by CroFab but are just as expensive. Its crazy, hell, I'd die when I opened the Hospital Bill.
Also, most insurance coverage has very minimal coverage compared to the costs.

In the cases, I saw boxes stacked with pictures of a rattler and then with a coral snake on them so that is probably the products. I really can't remember if the pictures were on the boxes or above the rack of boxes.

Charlie
^^^^the Fuel gets your butt to the hospital quickly!!! ^^That's it. Old term used in emergency medicine. "High flow O2" meaning non-rebeather at 15 Lpm for someone thats hypoxic. High flow diesel or high flow gasoline is an adaptation of that term. There's another acronym for this scenario as well as many others. P.U.H.A. Pick-em Up Haul A** One thing I've done, ahead of time is call the nearest hospitals and ask if they have anti-venom for pit vipers. For instance, from my place, Presby Greenville is who I called, and they do. If there's a bite at my place it would be a Copperhead or Cottonmouth.

If would have had me pistol on me hip, dont carry when cheeking cams, as pappy says: would have shot it & claimed self-deffence ... Did my hog hunts down road on WMA... Copperheads water-moccissens, cotten-mouth, some rattlers, not filiar with all the types... They wanted hogs gone, reproduction, could cull a deer, yet, Illeagal ta cull a snake ... got D- in grammer, went ta hospital due ta a knife fight with a hog... Had a great medic with me, was gonna let her handle it... Basicly went ta get tetnis shot... Snake bite is serious when wondering about the woods ... Stay Safe,

If a man were smart (or dumb) he would start a venom collecting business. Same antivenin at a vets office is between 60 and 70 a bag. There is plenty of venom for common snakes like rattlesnakes and copperheads. It's just our ripoff medical system.
