Following up Bobcats thread which I'm still drooling over.

I saw the traeger on the shopping channel or infomercial. Thought they were some gimmick. Now I see them everywhere..

What makes them so unique? Can you grill on one or just for smoking meats. Better than a "traditional" box smoker??

I see you just put a scoop of wood pellets? does this cut down on too much smoke?

You can cook anything you cook in an oven in them. I really like mine. I can slow cook a brisket on 225 or I can cook a steak at 500. You load the hopper with pellets set the temperature you want to cook at and forget it. No tending to the fire. I use a meat thermometer to tell me when its done. Love mine! I bought a Camp Chef Lux because of the reviews and side by side comparisons with others. Do your homework and buy one that does what you want. I almost bought the Red Tec but I love this one. Did not like the Traeger or Pit Boss as much as the Rec Tec or the Camp Chef. I actually like a lot of smoke flavor but yes the pellet cookers do cut down on it. I bought an AmazN smoke tube to use to put more smoke flavor in mine.

have a few friends with the pellet pooper type smokers, they produce some fine eating with minimal tending to feeding & temp control ... I roll old school but not a purest for others way to doing things

I think the best bbq comes off a wood fired pit, but I'm not hating on a pellet grill in fact I'm in the market to get one myself. Sometimes you want good bbq without all the work and this smoker can provide that. My goal is end up with a Komado, an offset and a pellet smoker.

amazingribs.com has the best reviews of all types of grills, pellet grills included. The Rec Tec looks nice but with shipping added, the price gets on up there.

How come they don't make those things with a thicker metal to make them more efficient for heat purposes, that is one thing I can't figure out.

My guess is because they would then be even more expensive to ship. If you want a thick steel pellet smoker get something like a Yoder. Much thicker steel, looked at one in person the other day. Also much more expensive.

Exactly. I almost bought a Yoder but it sold an hour before I got there. I really take good care of my stuff. A 3 burner grill from lowes I bought in 1995 still works. I gave it to my son after I replaced all the burners and hoses 2 years ago. He still cooks on it today.

I think keeping them out of the elements make them last longer.
