Friend of ours gave us some peaches from one of their trees. Tiny little things but man were they sweet and juicy. Extremely delicious. Wondering if anyone has ever grown them from seed? I've always heard you need grafted trees for fruits.

I've heard that you will never know.

I thought the same about grafting until my FIL gave me 3 peach trees grown from the pit.

I've got a couple of volunteer trees. Grown from seed. They both have peaches on them right now. First crop for both of them. If I can keep the squirrels off they should be good.

I'm going to give it a go, I respect my elders but still don't understand Mr. Oxner's comment.

find out the type of peach he has, then do research on that type of peach. Usually you can see the graft mark on the tree if you know what you are looking for. (research this too) If his tree is grafted then your chance are slim. This will save you years. They have came a long way in the past ten years on peaches, nectarines and plumes. Used to have it grafted here in Texas. Or check with your local extension office they might lead you in the right direction. Your friend has peach trees? Then he must have a pollinator (research). This will help out the growth, taste and how many blooms turn into fruit. If done correctly it could turn out the be a blessing. Or you can just grow a shade tree.
If his peaches were tiny, then possibly he didn't "thin the heard". Just like with deer, you have to thin the numbers you have so the rest of them can grow large and tasty.
Sorry for the long reply. Used to grow peaches, nectarines and plums. Too much work, if your not there year round. Now grow grass. Bahia grass that is.

You're taking a big gamble growing a tree from seed. Sure you might get lucky and the peaches will be tasty,but they also might be small and not fit to eat. They might revert to their old genetics.If they're not good tasting you've wasted 4-5 years growing it. I wouldn't take that gamble myself.BTW Walmart just marked down their fruit trees to 11.00 each. I bought a yellow delicious apple.

I tried it. Didn't work. had a big pretty tree in about 5 years covered up in peaches too but tiny peaches that are all seed. I cut it down.

I guess I shouldn't gamble then, specially when they are 11 bucks!
