When hunting my hounds, I carry the Ruger SR22 with long rifle ammo. Great trigger, extremely lightweight and amazingly accurate. If calling, I prefer the Ruger American Rifle topped with the Trijicon RMR in 22 mag. Lightweight, accurate and quick target acquisition. Adios, Gary

I kilked many with a 22 shorts in my single action pistol and single shot rifle. I have used a 22 mag growing up.

I killed two this morning with a 2x4. They were in my feeder and I had no weapon.

Here is mine. .257 Airforce Condor with Pulsar thermal. Coon killing machine!
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

22 LR Hollow Points in any rifle works just fine. Hit them in the head and they will go down. a couple of years ago I trapped a half dozen and took my .22 pistol with me to dispatch them...shot'em all in the head and everyone of them required at least two rounds. In the future I'm going to use my .17 to see if it'll work better.

Used to hunt Coleman area several years ago and had a 10 point that traveled with 3 coons doing the same thing. Had numerous pics with one coon spinning and the other two coons with 10 point eating below. They can clean a feeder in no time. Hey do like b0whunter with a 2x4, golf swing the hog then home run swing on the coon. Please provide some video so we can be as entertained as you will be. You do have a problem since they have formed a Coop! What ever is in my reach the gun/2x4/large stick or what ever is what I use. When I had a trap line I didn't shoot my trap catch unless it had a wide white strip. I used a night stick with about 4-5 .50 round balls placed in a hole drilled in the buisness end and capped with wood screw cap. Whacked the hell out of a bunch and very seldom required a second "tap". No hole in the hide.

It seems like there's a pattern, doves first then coons then deer and finally pigs after midnight. hogs do not show up for the 7am offering but the rest do. No co-ops going on. For whatever reason there seems to be a shortage on coons and squirrels. Didnt see any eyes in the trees this past weekend. We have not seen any possum or skunk at all.

I've been using my .17 HMR because the distance I am shooting (100 yds.) is better suited to that cartridge AND most of the time...I am targeting coons that are up on the automatic feeder (actively pilfering). With the .17 I am absolutely assured no 'exit' and possible damage to my feeder.
But...I have also found the diminutive .17 HMR to be something less than reliable in terms of making quick kills on coons. I'd say probably 25-30 % of them crawl off some distance before dying, some are never recovered.

.22lr is always a good option. I have used .22mag as well. if you have any interest at all in preserving the hides these are probably good options. I'm not a fan of the .17's although I'm sure they'd work well. anything bigger than that is overkill and just personal preference.
most of my experience with coons is controlling them around deer feeders. we will trap them or walk up on them at night and spot light them and shoot them. If you're not interested in the hides I would definitely use hollow point ammo or use a shotgun. I've found that solid point ammo doesn't knock them down hard enough. if you are walking up on maybe 3-4 coons and hoping to kill all of them you want to be able to shoot quickly and know for sure that you hit them so you can move on to shooting the next one. hollow points are good, and the shotgun with #4 is really good. it points fast on the run, shoots well in low light, and no doubt whether or not you hit them.
trapping I just use reg 22lr or 22mag. whichever im carrying while running traps.

Scoped .22lr, or whatever I can get me hands on at the time.....
