Decided to try and establish byg in a couple of my wetlands this year. It is supposed to produce 600-700 lbs/acre of seed and comeback with discing. Once it comes back it's then "native" and can be manipulated.

Here's what worked.

Compartment one-2 acres
1. drained in march and disced late march
2. Put out 10 lbs/acre seed.
3. Sprayed grazon in April to control broadleaf.
4. Flushed water once in May and once today.

Knee high and looking great.

Knee high and thick as if today.





Marsh 2- 7 acres.

1. Drained in march.
2. Disced in march.
3. No seed planted.
4. Flooded in April for 2-3 days.
5. Treated with grazon.
6. Knee high and looking great.





Sunflowers are doing otay too.

Nice, hard work definitely pays off,are these hunting plots? How did you flood the field, is there a creek/ bayou on your property that you get the water from? I bet a field full of sunflowers is nice to look over enjoying the sunrise & set

My place is on the Leon river and I've got 30 acre feet of water rights/year. I also have a 700gpm well for my pivot irrigator. I usually flush water with it. I have 30 acres of wetland compartments varying from 2-7 acres each. The biggest is at the highest point. I can put 6" on it and then release into the the next, then the next, etc. the last one is 2 acres. I then drain it into an outlet that goes to my lake. Pretty efficient system.

Been doing corn but it's a pain and is really expensive to do properly.

This year I'm doing one pond in jap millet planted in June. 3 flats jap planted in August, 2 flats in barnyard, and one in chufa- which so far doesn't look like it's going to do worth a crap in our heavy clay soils.

that looks great! a lot easier if you can get that established( which you did), will save lots of time and money vs planting each year. seed yield/acre is not near as good. But, minus a 24d application, some pumped water, and time its dang good enough. When I end up doing "plantings", I go rice/corn/milo simply because the yield is that much higher. Made my first attempt at a all SAV pond this year and the wigeon grass is THICK. just out of curiosity, did you try planting your rice anywhere?

Looks great. BYG due to late rains and 2.4d for broad leaves has exploded this year. I have a lot of it at one of my holes-I left the Japanese millet and Browntop in the barn this year. I've done the exact same thing why not plant BYG or use of moisture all techniques rather than planned every freaking year

Looks great. Will be interested in hearing how the birds respond to this crop vs others. I'm doubling the size of my wetland (will be 5 acres)currently and I've contemplated barnyard grass but leaning Pennsylvania smartweed for many of the same reasons you mention. Plant it once and will come back up in subsequent years with disking. I've killed a bunch of mallards over it so it's more of a confidence thing than anything else.
