I've been after this pig for several months. On more than one occasion it saw the glow of our old IR Flashlight (have since gotten one with less glow) and took off. The trip before this one I missed him by 10 mins. Finally the planets aligned and we were there waiting at the gate for the cell camera to go off. Once we got the text we walked in and got him. From my experience once their head goes up and looks in your direction you're screwed. Their next move is to duck and run! I was about 40 yds away at most covered in Off to keep from getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. This is the biggest pig I've shot so far. Just tall and fat (girth was 51" or 52")! To make it even more satisfying I shot him with some bullets I loaded that afternoon. Gotta love the Barnes 95gr TTSX in the 6.8 caliber!

Yep,

If you see them suddenly stop what they are doing, ears both facing forward (perked up)...then you know they have 'alerted' on something. They may or may not run. But IF they throw their nose up in the air, SHOOT...'cause they are getting ready to vacate the area.

Often times when a hog thinks it has detected a threat (or something suspicious) via its sense of Sight or Hearing...it will want to confirm/validate that notion using one the other senses (Hears something...wants to see it too).

But NOT with the sense of smell. They smell something they don't like they are GONE!

Good job.

Flint.

Nice pig there!

I also used the 95gr TTSX for quite a while in my 6.8.
Killed my biggest pig ever at 358 pounds with one.
I started using the 120gr SSTs when I started hunting more and more as they are about half of what the TTSX costs.

Cheers,

Thanks for all the compliments guys!

The scope I'm using is the Photon XT. I switched to a 940NM IR Flashlight. The standard T38 puts off a big red glow that spooks the hogs way too easily. We learned this the hard way. You can barely see the 940 one. It's helped out tremendously. We had a Pulsar handheld thermal we used on the walk. Those come in real handy. One day I may make the swap to thermal, but for now this is working great for the places I hunt.

Hey Vern1, we started buying the bullets in bulk. We can get 150 of them for $62.99. I had a lot of pressure issues when I first started loading them. I finally got the load right with no signs of pressure at all. They're shooting 1/2" groups at 100 yds. Two of the guys I hunt with use the 120SST's. One of them is swapping over to the Barnes due to the price point we're at now. I also shoot the TTSX in a .223. It killed a bunch of hogs before I built my 6.8 and moved my nightvision over to it. Almost every shot was a pass through with them dropping where they stood or running a max of 25 yds. I'm just sold on that bullet!

Oh he smelled! Between the natural funk they have and the soured corn mud he was in, well, it wasn't very pleasant!
