My son Joel harvested his first animal a few weeks ago and now he is hooked. Its not the prettiest creature but it sure did create some great memories we will never forget and will make an awesome skull for the wall.

I can share a some details of the hunt although I am not a very good story teller. We were scheduled to hunt Friday through Monday on Memorial Day weekend. Joel had been super excited for a whole month since I told him he was going to go. There were 10 of us going on this trip which included 4 of Joel's uncles, 2 of my best friends who are like uncles to Joel, one of my friends kids who Joel didn't know was coming because it was a surprise for both of them and one of Joel's PaPa's. So it was going to be a great weekend spending time with family and friends in the woods regardless of the success of the hunt. The first hunt we were mainly scouting but didn't see any potential shooters. The next morning we got a late start because the boys had worn each other out playing the night before. That late morning we see a beautiful Corsican ram that Joel really liked but as soon as we get settled in for a shot the ram moves on. Joel really likes this ram and is excited about getting him and gives the ram the nickname "Black Butt" which is a fair description. Now that is some slightly colorful language coming from my 7 year old but his momma isn't there so it's all good. That evening we catch up with "Black Butt" again. I try to quietly chamber a round into Joel's AR 15 and get him settled in for a shot. As soon as Joel is settle "Black Butt" starts to move off to the left but stops just at the tree line. The safety clicks off and.........click....... smirk nothing happens. So I grab the gun jerk back the T handle to forcefully load a bullet but by the time I get the gun back to Joel the ram is gone. I'm upset with myself and disappointed but my 7 year old is unfazed and is cool, calm and collected. I go to unload the gun and still no bullet in the chamber because apparently I didn't get the magazine in all the way. I did think it was strange I didn't have to use the forward assist when I eased the bolt forward but I didn't double check so lesson learned. The next morning the boys wanted wanted to go for a hike up so we did. After our hike we had a nasty thunder storm roll in with heavy rain, lightning and hail. Part of our group we're out hunting on the other side of the mountain but they all weathered the storm ok. After the storm passed two of Joel's uncles were headed down the mountain so Papa, Joel and I went to meet them and on our way we spotted the elusive "Black Butt" so we got settled in safety off and he turns walks straight away give no shot. Joel is disappointed but undeterred. So we sit and wait for a few minutes and out steps a big Rambo ram and Joel asks me if he can take that one. So we get settled in on this big guy and I'm a little nervous because I have seen Rambo rams take a few bullets and keep going. But Joel settles on him and drills him perfectly at 85 yards. The ram takes two steps falls straight down and is done. He is still excited and is ready for more. I can't wait till deer season so we can share more of these experiences. I have guided literally hundreds of hunts with people of all ages for animals large and small. I always got more enjoyment out of helping others get their trophy and make memories than I did hunting for myself. But nothing I have ever done can compare to the feeling of taking your own kid hunting and seeing them enjoying the hunt and the outdoors. Joel is my oldest son and this was his first hunt and it was amazing and I hope it is the start of a life long passion for him as it is for me. I also have a 3 year old daughter and 2 month old son I can't wait to get outdoors as well. Thanks for reading this long winded story I just hope I did the experience justice with my lack of story telling skills.

That's an excellent story! And one that I'm sure, will be remembered fondly for years to come! You sound like a great dad...and I think the world needs more great dads, to raise kids like this. Instead of being ignored and playing video games all day...or jacking with a phone.
