Anybody tried some lighter caliber ELD-M on critters yet? I have a 1:8 twist 22-250 I'm supposed to get next month and was wanting some heavy bullets for it. Hornady makes a 73, 75, and 80 ELD-M but no ELD-X. Figured they would be good on coyotes, deer and pigs but thought I'd check.

I'm sure they would work if no heavy bone is hit. I know the bigger eld m work for a fact.

Craig Boddington just did and article in Rifleshooter about .22 cal for deer and he used the 73 gr ELD-M in a 223 and with a behind shoulder shot deer took two steps fell over, no pass through but lungs were jelly. Out of a 22-250 behind shoulder I would think it would be a lighting bolt. I have used the 75 gr Heavy Match .223 for years on a deer with great results I would think the ELD would be even better. As Dee said heavy bone could be an issue, might knock em over but not kill.

I always shoot behind the shoulder. I did try a high shoulder shot this year on a buck with a Berger but won't do that again. I like explosive bullets in the lungs so sound like it might be a good one to go with.

I've shot countless deer high shoulder with bergers and never had one take a step or get up after the shot. This was with 7mm and .30cal nto sure if you only refering to .223

Well if you include the 75 and 80 gr AMax as well as the 80 gr ELD-M then I can attest to the fact they kill stuff just fine.

Not sure how many coyotes and deer along with pigs I have shot with them

You and me both. Other guys can have the exploding bullets on big game. I'd have to see numerous close range impact results before I'd even consider an ELD anything for big game, especially the ELD-M.

168g VLD H, 7mm Rem Mag HSM factory ammo, 100 yd impact on average sized whitetail buck, behind the shoulder.

JRaider, sure left a mess. I would stick with a premium hunting bullet like a Nosler Accubond, Ballistic Tip, Partitions, ELD-X, Sierra GK, or a premium cup and core bullet rather than using ELD-M or Berger. I once shot a 10 point buck in the back of the neck towards the chest cavity while it was eating with a Berger 168 VLD-H out of a 7 Mag at 90 yards and could barely find the entrance hole in the hide from the inside. It did tear up the neck vertebrae without punching into the chest cavity.

I've seen similar damage with a few different "hunting" c&c bullets and they all have one thing in common speed. Seems anything at or above 2900 destroys meat.

That is also true. I only shoot behind the crease of the shoulder to save meat and less of a mess.

I shot a nice 12 point a little far back at 480 (when I pulled the trigger he stepped forward)on impact he hit the ground then got up and ran. Very little blood at first then about 20yards blood was easily visible. He ran about 60yards, hit was mid body about third to last rib with 200gr 300WM

Could help myself, this post begs the question Why consider the ELD-M (target bullet) when there's a ELD-X for hunting?

Yup, yup.

Why I don't use a long action, magnum on 150 pound whitetails.

162 A-Max plodding along at 2635 fps, out of a 7-08 has been my favorite. Course, does get the brain stem severed, so there's not meat damage, guaranteed. smile

OP is wanting to use a .224 caliber for game larger than coyotes. The bullet weight he wants, is not available in ELD-X. The ELD-M has a thicker jacket, I believe. That could be of a benefit.

This is worth noting. Traditional cup and core bullets at velocities between 2400 - 2700 fps work amazingly well on medium sized game at normal ranges. While I own and like my 7 RUM, I also use copper bullets and save it for targets that require more power or range than your typical deer or meat hog.

Exactly. I didn't buy an 8 twist to run 50 grain Vmax out of. I bought it to run heavy bullets.

Perhaps there is a reason that Hornady doesn't make an ELD-X in less than 243.

I'd bet a majority of 224 rifles aren't fadt enough twist to justify. At least not in a hunting application.

Sorry....didn't know the X wasn't offered in smaller calibers. Should've read the post better rather than skimming through it. My two boys used to shoot .223 when they were yonger, I loaded 62gr barnesX for them and never lost a deer with it and some of the shots they made I still can't believe it actually killed the deer.

They made the .224" A-Max and 75 and 80 gr. Maybe the new ELD-M is the same jacket thickness?
