I was out in the country inspecting a house and happened onto the little guys. All three froze and did not move. I even touched one and it still didn't move.

Those birds are fun to watch. We have a pair that nests in our yard every year.

Those little suckers are so cute. Watch for the parents, they'll be raising cane around you shortly.

Now that is cool. Always liked those birds.

Interesting to watch the parents. With that busted wing routine they have a better flop than Manu Genobli.

Annoying as hell during dove season but they are very cool birds. Used to love finding their nests as a kid.

I've got a few living in my front yard. The baby is running around every morning, but can't fly yet. Mama freaks out when I come out and starts flopping around. Pretty funny to watch.

That's cool as heck! I've looked for their nests a bunch of times, but never actually found one.

Can't stand those birds, but doesn't mean the little ones aren't cute

I was running in my neighborhood a month or so ago and a momma had 4-5 chicks. They were running down the street with curbs on either side, trying to figure out how to get out of the street and into the empty lots.

Couple years ago I hit a nest while mowing the yard. There was one that survived I picked it up and gave to my daughter and told her to put it in the incubator with some day old chicks she had just hatched. She went to check on them right before bed time that night and it had killed about twenty of her new chicks it would walk right up to one and just start pecking the heck out of thier head. She reached in the box pulled it out and pitched it out in the yard said it was on its own and to try that pecking mess with the cat. Had no idea they were that aggressive.

Deer hound, that's a great story. I had to laugh at your daughters practicality.
Sounds like she is pretty smart.

The killdeer nests I have found are usually on fence rows. Beautiful eggs and the whole theatrical performance. Sadly the fire ants have just about wiped them out around me.

One shot is all it should take.

Check the hard gravel and rocky area's, they build on the ground by stacking and arranging rocks. The adult will be on the nest or close by and usually stays on the ground but immediately walks away from the nest and may go into the busted wing routine or just make allot of noise. Go to the area they came from and check carefully, it's usually a small mound and most of the time it will have 4 egg's. They nest on the side of the roads here so when I see them I put survey flags or markers by the nest so nobody drives over them.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Here ya go. Found this nest of eggs on the side of a county rd just a few minutes ago. One of the parents was just standing there, figured there was a reason. Enjoy!!
