Have a set of 50+ yr old mule deer antlers that have hung in a barn most of that time. They have not been in direct sunlight or rain and bad weather. However, time and other factors have taken the "life" out of them. Need some suggestions as to how to put that "life" back in them. Thanks.

I have used MinWax Early American stain on whitetail antlers, it makes for a nice natural look. The stain will dry and lighten a little. I had one set that was pretty old and got really dark, I left it outside in the sun for a week to tone it down. You might want to try it on a spare antler to see if you like the color first. Old dried antlers can suck up a lot of stain and get really dark. I have heard of using potassium permanganate, but I have never seen the results.

OK thanks! Any other suggestions and where can I get a small panel with a cover for the skull cap that is inexpensive? The panel has to be real wood!

I've used fresh coffee grounds and rubbed them onto the antlers thoroughly. The fresher the grounds the better. Once the antlers dry, if its not dark enough then keep rubbing til you get the desired color you want. The only problem with wood stain is if not done right it looks fake.
