Any of you guys ever use the mineral blocks with success? I'm thinking of drilling a hole through them and then tying them to trees to pull deer out of a creek that runs down one side of our property. Maybe stagger them through the woods towards our food plots. I've never seen anything eat them though so not sure its worth the hassle.

For the price I would just use corn, never had much lick with the blocks. Pigs WILL try and roll them off.

I put one in my feeder pen right in front of the camera. Never got a single picture of a deer eating it. I threw it outside the pen and the hogs played soccer with it.

Maybe do both a mineral and a white salt. See which one gets attention. I plan on putting out both on my next trip out.

I suspect it depends on the mineral composition of the soil in your area. If the deer have natural lick areas they may not use the blocks. In my area they hit the trace mineral salt blocks pretty hard.

At my place, the deer will use a salt lick and the hogs dont want any part of it. The hogs will destroy a mineral/molasses block within a couple days, but the deer never touch it.

Based on this feedback, seems like a waste of money. Glad to validate my thoughts.

I tried one of the molasses type blocks and the hogs devoured it. Planning to try again now that I have solid pens.

I did see a guy buy a truck bed full of them at the San Saba Super S one day. He said the deer at his place love them.

I've tried the molasses mineral blocks at various different locations in central and west TX, they would break down from the weather with minimal interest from the deer. I typically will put out the sulfur salt blocks (light yellow) and have had decent success different times of the year. My dad used to put those out for cattle and the deer would also come in to them occasionally and I've been doing that for over 40 years, mainly to try to help reduce ticks on the livestock and deer.

I was given a bag of loose mineral(antlermax) from my feed guy. I dumped it on the ground and they used it for a little bit.


I do use those record rack blocks and my deer seem to like them. They are probably more of a protein block than mineral though.




The hogs really like them too so I built little cages to put them in just to keep them from rolling out of camera view.

Almost every deer visiting my feeder the last 2 weeks has licked on the mineral salt block I get at the feed store. I usually see heavier use in late summer, but they have nearly wittle down a full block since last Aug.

Just like salt blocks. Animals will lick them if they "need" to.

Salt and mineral licks and blocks, deer that I have observed hit them more in the Summer than any other time of the year. In Mississippi I have gotten rid of oak stumps just by keeping a supply of salt on them, the deer cleaned them up down below the ground level after a few years. By bow season they would be pretty much done with them though, when the acorns started falling they quit hitting them. A the lease there is salt and minerals out for the cattle and the deer do hit those.

I have used the trace mineral blocks for years and the deer and hogs will use them. I have a large stump on the family farm that I have been putting a block on for years. One night with a full moon I was out looking for the hogs. I was standing within 50' of the stump and wind in my favor when 7 deer came by the stump and checked it. At the time the block had been used up for a while and they still came to check. I put one out the next day. There are teeth marks in the stump when it melts into it where the animals will continue to go for the salt. I also have game pics of deer and hogs at the stump. I used one on a lease in Coleman Co. one time and after the deer had finished the block they dug a hole going after what had melted into the ground. The cheap $5-6 block from feed store works as good as any "deer block" I have ever used.

I had decent luck with the feed store mineral blocks until I started feeding protein. The protein has all of the trace minerals deer need and they completely quit eating the blocks.

That's pretty much the experience I had with the blocks when I was feeding leases. I used protein from Record Rack, Mummies, and some from Lyssy & Eckels,and the deer ignored the blocks completely. The blocks basically melted from nature.

A molasses block wont last that long at our place. I put one under the feeder once and the game cam pictures showed them finishing it in an hour.

We use the $10 blocks from TSC. They last longer and they get more attention than most of the marketed deer blocks where we hunt. We tried about 6 different blocks last year and Trophy Rock was good but the TSC block has been the best by far and $10 for 50lb is a much better deal.

Our deer love them. Unfortunately the raccoons love then even more and they don't last long. Probably not worth the time and money but we still put them out. Have lots of game camera pics of deer eating/ licking them
