I don't do a specific summer cut but I do get them groomed each month and use the furminator a little more often.

I use the Furminator every weekend on my black Lab. Check with your Vet on the buzz cut.

I believe Lab's have a "double" coat and need full coat to help regulate body temp.

PLEASE be careful in the heat, back when I was running field trails and hunt tests we always had a washtub of cold water and rubbing alcohol in our kits. The heat and humidity can take a Lab "South" in a hurry. It's ugly and very deadly to watch one with heat stroke. Only took me one time.

mattyg06, the Furminator you speak of, is it the hand held , yellow brush or does the groomer have one which is attached to a vacuum, which I would love to own.

I cut my Brit year 'round. He runs hot and loves a trim.

I have the hand held on and I believe the vet as the one with the vacuum. I agree on not getting them buzz cut though as I have read the same thing that they need both of their coats.

I shave my lab and my setters. Have not had any issues with a shorn lab

Gun's don't kill people. The Government does.

I killed eight gophers last year and a purebred Tennessee walking horse that was looking at me funny.

Please don't shave your lab. Their coats do help regulate their temperature.

What is a double coat?

The double coat is made up of an outer coat and an undercoat. The outer coat is made up of longer , guard hair and the undercoat more dense, coarse hair. The outer coat helps repel moisture and dirt. the undercoat helps keep dogs insulated.

Why not shave a dog with a double coat?

Shaving a dog with an undercoat takes away their protection. The undercoat is the insulation the Lab needs to keep cool during the summer and warm during the winter. It also protects your dog against getting sunburn from damaging UV rays.
