I have a rescue dog that I can not seem to put any weight on him, 2 yrs old, and trip to the vet for all shots and exam did not show any reason for lack of weight. He eats good and has plenty of exercise. Any thoughts or tips on what regiment might add some weight???

Feed twice a day. 2/3s of his old feeding morning and night.

I got a collie that has that problem. I've started buying some cheap hamburger meat and frying it up to put with her food a couple days a week, it seems to be working alright.

I am feeding him morning & evening and snacks in between feedings. I have been feeding eggs, raw and cooked. Changing water several times daily. I load his food with roast and pork and chicken and heating it to make sure he consumes that "extra" portion...

I keep thinking in the next morning I will go outside and he will be a rolling chubby fellow. He does not beg for food, but his appetite is great. I appreciate the tips above, at least I think I have been on the right track.

When I got my current foster failure, he was scrawny as well. I was feeding him 2 solo cups of food twice a day, with an egg at each meal. My vet was amazed that he was eating that much but still only putting on a couple pounds per visit. He finally got up to his fighting weight, but he's still kind of small compared to what he could have been. Doc chalks it up to malnutrition as a pup. Given enough time and energy, I could build him to what he "should" be, but he's happy and healthy, so I don't worry about it.

Give it time. His body is likely still in the scrambling stage where it's not used to knowing where the next meal is coming from. He'll get there. I'd much rather have the problem of a skinny dog than a fat one.

And since we're talking about dogs, you have to have a pic.

That's incredible, good on ya sir.

To the OP, I also have tried raw goats milk with her food. It worked, but didn't last lost because have to go to one of those fancy pet stores to get it and it's pricey.

neighbor has goats, might ask him about milk but I have seen dogs develop intestinal problems with raw milk. Used to have some dairies in our area.

Google "Satin Ball". I've used satin balls to fatten dogs up before.

Go to Chewy.com and order Dyne High Energy feeding supplement. Works wonders.

I put wheat germ oil in our horses feed to fatten them up. Not sure if it works for dogs.
Also, I know that one of my dogs only stays fat on a certain brand of food. I can feed other nutritionally "equal" foods and he loses weight. Tried switching foods?

Did your vet check for intestinal parasites, hook, whip, tape, and round worms?

Then again, you could go the stripes store and buy him two egg and bacon tacos each morning. Get the one's with flour tortillas with extra lard They make me gain weight--should work for the the dog.

I've got a foster right now that I'm feeding 3 times a day.
She's not food motivated, so I have to add cottage cheese, a or a small amount of canned food to it.
Satin balls are a good choice to try and get some weight on them.

I have taken this fellow to the vet to get all inoculations up to date and check for parasites including heart worms. I have given different food, 2-3 meals daily, fresh water, meals are laced with roast or pork or chicken to encourage eating and add protein, raw eggs are mixed with food, food similar to the satin balls, no cottage cheese but does get ice cream, etc etc. He has plenty of energy, and may just be one of those dogs that runs light.
I'm concerned that with summer heat coming soon that he may eat less.

When my labs were young they were scrawny and they ate a lot. I started feeding trimmings from brisket and adding eggs and bacon grease to their food. That helped them until they could no longer hunt. Now they are rationed because of their age.

To the guy that posted the recovery of the shepard, you Sir are a bad arse guy. Great job!

Still working on putting on weight, mixed some of the satin ball formula and trying it as a 'Dessert' after his normal meals of dogfood and added pork, chicken, beef. Plus still giving him treats. Some of his ribs are slowly disappearing. I have had a dog(s) in my life for 68 years and this one is first that just runs thin. Never had a fat dog, but never had one this scrawny. Trying to see what is working by changing slowly but also keeping food diversified enough to keep his taste buds happy. Fridge looks like a delicatessen.. I almost tossed the unsulphered molasses when I opened it.

Just wanted to thank you fellows for your response and suggestions.

I do think some dog are just a bit thinner than others.
My foster has only gained 2 1/2 lbs since I last posted, and I've been feeding her everything she will eat.

I know the OP said a rescue dog but what kind ? As mentioned some dogs are in better shape being skinny like bird dogs for example and Brittanys' are good example cause they are high tense and hyper active . But way in the past I had a Springer Spaniel and a Boxer and I fed them Purina High Protein and that kept them real fit , shiny coats and very stout muscle build . Main thing is feed them high protein in anything , that's good muscle builders .
