Grandma would go out and squirt the bears with a water bottle and shoo them away.

The holidays just aren't the same without Grandma.

If it's edible and within their reach, a bear will eat it. Period.

The bears will also pay you a visit you in Ruidoso if you put out hummingbird feeders.

My grandfather used to pop them with a BB gun whenever they were raiding his trashcans eek2 . We were all amazed that he died peacefully in his sleep.

Black bears are drawn to bird feeders like magnets. Once they identify a food source they will make repeated visits to the site in search of food, Bears will eat pretty much any seed but sunflower seeds, thistle and corn are favorites.
We bring in our feeders when first bears start to come of hibernation. Not all black bears hibernate, we've had bears on our trail cams throughout the winter in December, January and February during snow storms They will bend some pretty stout metal poles to get to the food in a bird feeder. They seem to have an affinity to bite plastic, regardless if they contain food or not. Rubber hoses are also high on the list of items around a house or cabin that frequently get bitten. Also anything new in their environment usually sustains a bite or gets torn up.

That's an everyday occurance in the north...dad (fam) has cabin in WI and everyone takes feeders down this time of year. Dad had many in the yard every year eating anything they can. What kills us is the 5-6 4 wheeler seats they have eaten....the last one to do this had his last meal as dad had a tag and shot him right off the top of the wheeler!
