I am relocating to the Dallas in July. I've lived in Alabama my entire life and love whitetail hunting. I'm looking for advice on everything... Living in Frisco, is there some public land for rifle hunting that will be accessible? for 2018, I would like to get in on a lease, but that is probably not feasible for 2017. I know the hunting will be totally different, but I'm excited for the possibilities of bigger whitetail, plus the other species that are available in Texas.

You will need a lease, start looking now. Frisco has no public hunting land.

Day hunting for meat deer and hogs isn't very expensive; you can find very good deals on the "Outfitters" sub-forum here. Finding a good inexpensive lease within reasonable driving range of DFW is like finding a winning lottery ticket. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but you certainly can't plan on finding one. Of course, if you're willing to open up the checkbook ...

to Public land is few and far between here in Texas, but there are opportunities. The drawn hunts usually come out at the first of July and you can apply for various places for a nominal fee for the various hunts. There are also opportunities to hunt deer with a permit, but they are all a pretty good drive from where you live in Frisco (I am next door in McKinney). Here is a good link to see what is available and what might be of interest to you. http://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/

Your best bet the first year is with an outfitter then you can get a lease the next year. Although we do have some public hunting lands in Texas there really isnt that much land for the public so it isnt much more than a meat hunt typically if that because of overcrowding and overhunting. Hunting public lands is doable (I do it) and it will require a $48 APH Permit (annual Public Hunting). This will get you access to most of the areas open to the public. When you pay your $48 you will get a booklet explaining everything.
It will definitely sharpen your skills by hunting public land with no baiting or game cameras allowed. But its fun!!
GO TRUMP!
