Hello,
I'm new to the site and trying to learn. Recently required a lease and need a couple of cheaper feeders. After the lease price, I'm going to have to go cheaper on the feeders and blinds for a couple of years.
Is the Moultrie Pro Magnum 55 gallon drum feeder a decent cheap choice? I can buy them today for about $250 each. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Check buccees locations if there are any near you. I can get the 300lb all season feeder at my buccees for under $300.

Its no guarantee, but chances are you will be replacing the motors on moultries after a season or two. Buy once, cry once.

Good advice rickym. I live in Amarillo and don't think there is anyone near me that sells them. From what I've read, All Seasons is a good feeder. Does anyone know someone that sells them within driving distance from me?

Ask around your local feed stores, someone will know.

And welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. I would build a crank up feeder, you could build a really good one for under $300 for everything.

I'll look in to parts and see what it would cost. Any recommendations on timers, motors or??

Sorry, I'm new to setting up deer feeders and blinds for whitetail. I'm doing this to take my 9 and 12 year old grandkids hunting. Hunted spot and stalk mule deer in western TX panhandle for the past 30 years and killed some nice ones. The ranch changed hands and I lost the place. Moving to the eastern panhandle for whitetail and turkey.
Thanks for the help!

Start off with a barrel, digital timer, leg brackets and 3 legs approximately 8' long. Some put a funnel on the inside of the barrel and you will need a small funnel in the bottom of barrel to feed corn on to spinner plate.
Of course this is not the crank up.

how handy are you at making things out of metal? access to a welder?

buy a barrel with lid and locking band for ~$30 like these barrel with locking lid

get 3 pieces of 1-1.25 square tubing about 3 feed long, bend to 15-20 degree at the 2 foot/1 foot. Bolt or weld to side of barrel. ... OR buy something pre-made like this[/url] like this or like this

get 3 pieces of 1.25-1.5 square tubing (that will slide over that mounted to barrel) about 8 feed long

get a metal drop funnel like this or like this or like this

get a metal 50 cal ammo can like this and 4 pieces of 4-5 inch long 1/4-20 all thread. Move in from the outside 3/4 inch from the sides and end, drill 5/16 hole (4 holes 3/4 in from edges) on the hinge end.

get a 12VDC like this OR 6VDC (cheaper) like this electric motor ... and drill holes in center of the top of ammo can to match pattern on electric motor and mount shaft side out.

find center of the bottom of the barrel and drill a hole to match the metal drop funnel. line up the center of the motor shaft mounted in the ammo box with hole in bottom of barrel, mark location of the 4x 5/16 holes from ammo can to bottom of barrel. drill 4x 5/16 holes in bottom of barrel. Mount the 4-5 inch all thread in 4x holes in bottom of barrel with nut, lock washer & flat washer on both the inside and outside leaving minimal threads on the inside of the barrel (should be 3.5+ inches protruding outside the bottom of the barrel to mount the ammo box using similar hardware on both the outside and inside of the ammo can.

you will need a spinner plate cheaper version or better Eliminator plate but considerably more expensive ... be sure to get a spinner plate with appropriate motor shaft size!

then you will need a timer my recommendation The-Timer but you can likely find cheaper OR a feeder timer kit that will include the box, timer, spin plate, drop funnel like this

a rechargeable battery 6 or 12 VDC depending on which motor you used ... buy 2 batteries for each feeder unless you add a solar panel to keep the one in the feeder charged.

if you don't go with the Eliminator spinner plate, you will need some type of cage to keep the coons out like this

and buy 1x 10 foot section of 4 inch PVC pipe, cut into 3 pieces ~40 inches long to attach to the legs ~3-4 foot off the ground with heavy wire or light dog lease type chain to allow the pipe to swing/spin to prevent coons from climbing

that should put you close

I have found used feeders on Craigslist that were the barrel/lid, legs and timer box without battery or timer for $50-75, that I merely add The-Timer, Eliminator Plate (or coon cage) and a new battery ... works well for pretty cheap if you can find the used pre-made barrel with legs. You can always add a solar panel for not much more but I have found it best to attach the solar panel to the timer box inside the coon cage as the coons will eat the wires, destroy flex conduit

I worked on this between teleconferences, meetings, interruptions ... so I just hope it makes sense and I got all components covered.

Wow PMK, appreciate the time you took to help a newbie out. Great information not only for me but probably a lot of other people here.
Thank you!!

I actually looked at one that I have in the bed of my Kubota RTV that I am doing some work on to take to Ozona to replace the one that the cows/hogs/pterodactyl/Sasquatch bent the legs out on (in the deer hunting thread) ... and I realized that there are 2 pieces of flat strap going cross ways on the top of the ammo box that the all-thread mounts thru instead of directly into the ammo can.

PMK gave you some great advice. I'll add another possible path, with a little less fabrication required.

-Buy a used 55 gal drum, lid, and lock ring ($30)
-Buy a bolt-on leg bracket or stub leg kit ($30) or even better a belly band (~$45, no drilling or penetrations in drum required)
-Buy your choice of leg materials. I personally like 1.25" EMT. Galvanized (rust resistance with no paint required and decent wall thickness). It will cost you ($30) at Lowes or HD for three 10' EMT sections.
-Buy a metal funnel for the barrel ($30)
-MOST IMPORTANT: Select your motor-timer unit. My strong advice: Go 12V right from the start. You can find a good galvanized box with a decent timer and 12V motor for ($100), and a new 12V battery will cost you about ($20). I too prefer and recommend THE TIMER, but it will cost you an additional $25.

There you have it. With these parts you will have a real solid ~300lb capacity spin feeder set up for ~$240 that will run circles around that Moultrie and last much longer too.

And, when you are ready you can "cadillac it out" with a box-mounted 12V solar panel ($30), and an Eliminator Spin plate ($35) (agree with PMK, both worth it.)

Hope this helps, and good luck. You can find all this stuff locally, but if you have any trouble I carry it all too and can ship.
