She wouldn't eat Tuesday evening so we started keeping an aye on her, Wednesday she was acting a little droopy and could tell she wasn't feeling good. Wife noticed a lump on her chest / belly so we decided it was best to get her into the vet. His first thought was ruptured mammary tumor but wanted to run some tests and check her out, an hour later he calls and tells me it's an abscess from more than likely a snake bite. They drained it and are flushing with antibiotics, then she gets 10 days of antibiotics at home then back for a check up. I honestly thought we were going to have to say goodbye to my #1 girl. She's not out of the woods yet but she is in good hands and instead of having to bury her, I get to hopefully enjoy more time with her. She will be 12 next week and is the Monarch of our Kennel.

Glad it wasn't worse than it was, hope she's back to her old self soon.

Glad your dog's going to be OK. How old did the vet think the bite was?

He didn't say and I didn't ask. I just know the lump wasn't there Monday (or at least not big like that). I guess it's possible it wasn't even a venomous snake, they say even non venomous snakes have a nasty bacteria in their mouths and can cause infection when they bite. I have tried to start not killing every snake I see but the hell with that now. All snakes in my yard will die from now on. Cost is at about $350 right now.

I had a Palladin bread female named Ginger that had a swelling with pus just under her front leg in her chest. I took her to my vet. A temp was there. He told me that it looked like a snake bite. He treated it. It didn't get better. I took her back and the regular vet was there. He took a wooden stick as big as my index finger out of the wound.

Hope she's on the mend.

Certainly hope your dog is ok but killing every snake you see is a mistake. A few years ago I had some weaned pups in an exercise pen and heard them one day barking in an unusual way so went to see what was up. The pups were barking at a speckled king snake that was in the process of eating a copperhead, inside the pen. I let the pups out so they would leave the event alone. I wish I had got a picture of what I witnessed because I don't think anyone could see what I saw and harm a king snake in any way.

I wouldn't kill a King, indigo or Coachwhip. But all these dang rat snakes and water snakes are going to be killed with fire.

Sounds like she's on the right path. Glad it wasn't worse.

Wow Kev, glad she's doing better. Hoping for a speedy recovery and many more hunts with her.

She's recovering pretty good, enjoying hanging out inside and being pampered by Momma. Still has about a golfball size lump but it seems to be going down. Will take her back next week if it isn't gone.
