Any of you fellas plant this before? Researching something to supplement my bees, read several threads where deer wiped out buckwheat in Texas food plots (where planted also for bees)

Further reading and, this may be a decent Spring through Summer crop IDk. Supposedly releases many minerals in the soil for the next crop to have available (like fall plots), supposed to also be quick to breakdown in the soil as a green tillage crop and it is edible for humans.

Ordered a bag, not cheap, but curious how it will do.

Got the seed yesterday, going to try to get in some this afternoon after a doc appt. Good thing we got those rains recently and hopefully we get a little more. Supposed to handle "dry" very good once sprouted.

If the deer are too hard on the buckwheat you could try partridge peas. Deer will it it but it's more attractive to birds and bees.

Mike, I have partridge pea already here, never have seen a bee on it, a lot of native bees though.

Interesting. My landowner is setting up for bees and I was planning a much larger clover plot to help em out.

Well, I got out a small area prior to a forecast rain, it started raining as I was discing , Since the seed in the bucket I had was already getting wet, I threw it out in the disced area, but was unable to drag like I normally do, talk about haphazard! Well, took about 5 days and it started to sprout, then it turned dry, so I figured it would burn up.

Got near 3" of rain on it yesterday AM and it seems to really be doing good in this dry time, so it should really put on mass quick. I haven't seen a lot of deer browsing it, but sure is a lot of curiosity. Once they get used to it, it will be interesting to see if they use it.

As I mentioned in the OP, I am planting this for my bees as an experiment, but after more reading and the improvements in makes in the soil for my food plots, it would be a great bonus for deer if the utilize it. This may be my summertime choice if the deer take to it as it so far has been heat tolerant and easy as heck to grow (so far). Supposed to flower within 6 weeks or so and re seads very good, so.....

Here is a photo of it coming up, net time I will use the drag and get a smooth surface and see how that impacts germination using the same methed I plant my winter plots. So far looks like a bean plant, or lablab type plant.

Well, going to have to plant a larger area, planting for bees was a fail, but deer loved the hell out of it once they figured it out. Plants got up and started buds and it was gone in a night and I have a low density deer herd.
