I checked my cameras this weekend and found a hard horned 6 point on cam at 12:01am on 3/18/2017. I don't recall ever seeing bucks hold on to the bone that long. Is this something that you have seen? Is his "clock" off?

Thanks everyone for the discussion!

Did he look healthy, sometimes health problems will make them hold onto em a little longer, or shed a little early.

Do you have a lot of does? Possible later winter breeding going on?

I have seen bucks in the western part of Texas being hard horned as late as April 22 one year.

This is up near the Red River, in Northern Montague Co. And to answer the question about doe ratio, there are a lot of doe. There was a late secondary rut on my place this past year.

Thank you for the input guys

We are pretty deep south texas, but antlers on in March is common there.

Several years ago we saw a super wide short tined 6pt at choke canyon state park that was in velvet in late season, we thought it was odd and said maybe he is a stag. A few months later we went back and in early summer all the other bucks had no antlers or the beginnings of numbs and we saw the same 6pt and he was hard horned then.

I really miss what that park used to be when they allowed feeding the deer.

I saw a big buck in Leander one night in March, and he was still hard horned. I saw two in N.La one summer in July and they were hard horned. One was a giant spike and the other about an 8pt. I saw a deer in far west TX in the winter time still in velvet. But I've never seen a velvet buck in N.La. So who knows.

I have found fresh shed antlers in a feed pen as late as June. I have also seen fawns with spots on them in mid-November. It happens.

March 21 this year full 10 point. Late ruts and late fawn crops in southern Val Verde County.

I ran cameras, and the cards ended in April. Probably 20 bucks with antlers until mid March

We have one buck in Mills County that never shed, he is a spike on one side and 3 point on the other. We are curious to see how he turns out.
