set up a cam & let us know the results ... that one pic looks like lightning hit it... It's barely off camera from the cam I already have set up over there. I'm hoping that something will step out in front of it to give me some more clues.

I thought they were Cedar until I saw some Cedar trees. Juniper is good too, they make gin from the berries.

I'll take Bear for 500.00 Alex. A few have wandered through north of Sanderson.
Somebody, not me though, should be able to tell the difference between elk hair, goat hair, and bear hair.

I know this may sound crazy, but there is a Baboon herd somewhere West of San Antonio. A rancher with a large piece of land had contacted one of the local shooters to get some guys out to his place that could shoot them from longer ranges. They could not get close to them without them running to another area. I was told to pack my rifle and ammo, and we were headed out the next morning. But the rancher called and said the herd had left. They did a lot of damage to his place. I called my game warden, and he confirmed that there was a known heard down there, and that it was legal to shoot them and there were no restrictions. I didn't believe it, but they were known to be in that area. Not sure if this applies to your tree or not, but just a thought.

If you were in east Texas, I would say you had a bigfoot in the area! But there are no known reports around in Val Verde County, so most likely some other culprit.
But closer examination, it does resemble a bull elk rub. Branches broken by the antlers and definite rub areas with dirt/mud on the bark.

But closer examination, it does resemble a bull elk rub. Branches broken by the antlers and definite rub areas with dirt/mud on the bark. my first glance thought lighning... its hard ta tell, the pics are kinda blurry, could been cause small screen & sqinting... had sugjested put trail cam in case it returns, said their was lo of prints, but none clear enough ta get decent cast, sugjrdted using trick I use on trails before cams, smooth area check later... my cams never set for night... wasn't sure of area pics were taken, spent many hours day & night in woods hog hunting, didn't have high-tech NV, Thermal was gigantipithicus think that's scientific name around mammoth or masterdon age, rumors have it most recent sighting, a bigfoot training an elephant... like with antler size, aging bucks, width of rack, or weight of hog... until one is culled cant say for certain... that's why i don't were a gillisuit in the woods, use hunter orange... huntsolo & whin ya out in that their thick stuff, were them wild hogs hide, pappy says it best: its not the hogs that scare me, its the hunter in the woods scared of his own shadow ... Been hitting the woods up here, looking for abonible snow man yet-i ta see one, think they migrate further North were theirs more snow & the woods are thicker.. Is kinda like with me alien body parts, evidence is their, yet few believe, they just laugh & make fun... that reminds me got several text, on me android, got D- in English, but these words are alien looking, think they from outerspace... could be they trying ta make contact...

Black bears will tear branches and often sleep in trees. The claw marks are similar to what are shown in your pics. We get bears coming through our property in Pennsylvania almost every day from April- November. We will see 20-30 different bears on our property each year. We've had sows use Hemlock trees in our back yard as a nursery. They sometimes use the branches as sort of a nest and sleep in the trees for several hours. Sows often leave their Cubs in the tree while they search for food.
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Edmund Burke

i would rule out lightning, no burn marks I have seen many trees around here hit by lightning. I have never seen burn marks on any of them. Lightning hits the tree. It heats up the moisture inside and the tree explodes from the internal pressure.

Well, that certainly can and does happen, but lightning also can burn trees. Sometimes they catch on fire as a result, and sometimes not.
