I loaded up some Nosler 110 Varmegeddon and Hornady 110 v-max I had on hand for the Blackouts. Just curious if they are a hog killer or best left for varmints. Currently using 125 TNT's, 125 BT's, and 110 Barnes blacktips for the pigs. Looking to increase velocity from 9" barrelled pistol AR or going back to the 16" upper in rifle configuration.

One shot is all it should take.

With the reduced velocity in your short barrel, the 110 grain varmint bullets should work fine. The lower velocity should not allow them to have dramatic expansion like a typical varmint bullet does.

Thanks Chad, that's what I was thinking. I was getting soso expansion on the 125 noslers Ballistic Tips in water jugs at 100 yds. They did better in the 16". I guess I should set up the chronograph and clock em.
thanks.

Yes. Here's Friday night's pig taken with a 125 Nosler BT at about 130 yards with my 16" AR. I'm running right at 2230 fps in an AR 15, 16" barrel. In my bolt gun, they are running 2350 fps. With a shorter barrel, you will lose about 20-25 fps per inch. In a 9" AR, you'll be running about 150 fps slower than the 2230 (atleast in my ammo, not sure what speed you are running), so about 2080 fps. Most bullets will expand down to about 1900-2000 fps. After about 1800 fps and under, expansion is heavily reduced, if any at all. I know for a fact that a 150 grain Nosler BT in a blk out at 1950 fps in my bolt gun, will NOT expand in a pig at about 60-70 yards out. That bullet made a .308" hole in, and a slightly bigger hole going out. It killed the pig I was shooting at within about 40 yards, but I like more expansion, so I switched to the 125's. The 125's at the 2230 muzzle speed in the AR, and the 2350 fps in the bolt gun have shown perfect mushroom shaped expansion. Reduce that to 2080 at the muzzle, and by impact, that bullet will have limited expansion.

Switch to the 110 grain weights, and that will certainly help expansion. My 110 V-max is running 2370 fps in a 16" AR. Put that in a 9", and that will put you in the 2200 fps mark. With a varmint style bullet (thinner jacket), it will help with expansion at impact speeds. These also make a great self defense round.

Thank you sir. Yes I tried 150 soft points in the ar rifle and it would just smear the exposed lead tip, absolutely zero expansion. The 135 grain Berger was great but they dropped it.

I chronographed them this morning out of the 9" pistol and the 16" rifle. I'm skeptical if they are fast enough in the pistol for hogs.

In the 9" barrel pistol 10 shots in fps 12 ft from muzzle

In the 16" rifle 5 shots in fps 12 ft from muzzle

I could try loading them a little hotter than the 19.0 grains H110 at 2.050", Rem 7 1/2 primers still rounded. This load out of the rifle is alright though.

I'm running them at around 2400 in a bolt gun, I think you can bump it up a bit more.

Yeah bolts are another animal altogether. I have a little Lil'Gun on hand to try. Hodgdon site lists it about 200 fps faster at a lower pressure in a 16". If the muzzle flash isn't too bad it might work in the pistol too. Thanks.

I like the 110gn Nosler with Lil Gun in my Ruger bolt gun. Very accurate and quite deadly on deer and feral dogs.

Are you going to pull those pistols, or whistle Dixie?

The pressure curve on the Lil'Gun looks like it would be better on the gas system. What barrel lengths are those bolt guns? And range on the deer? I want to be able to anchor a big pig. Seriously considering moving the atn to the 16"BLK or the x39.
The 7.62x39 is just plain loud in the hood. I want to respect the neighbors sleep 1/2 mile out.

16" 7 twist on the RAR. For the money, it's a silly good bargain to be that accurate and come pre-threaded from the factory.

They will work fine! I have dropped several out of a SBR with a .308 can. Most of my shots are around 80 yards.

Thanks for the first hand reports everyone. I did move the DNV over to the 16" rifle for now. Seeing first hand what a 125SST did to a boar I have a good reference to compare the 110 Varmegeddon. That Hornady 125 SST was like a hand grenade, almost removed afront shoulder if not for some skin holding on. And this was a big old boar, Heart and lungs were mush @100 yds. DRT
