Wow. We came across a black bear in the mountains in CO when archery hunting once. Thank goodness the bear was just as startled of us as we were it. That was as close as I had been to a bear in the wild, at about 80 yards. The bear took off promptly.

I have seen quite a few bears doing work in the Tahoe area. It is amazing how big they are up and close. I wonder what ultimately happened when the bear charged him?

I was told by my daughter who lives in Montana, "Bears will hunt you down, kill you, then eat you." I thought that would make a great T-shirt.
That is one lucky feller.

So, it appears he didn't put the shoot it. Did he just play dead for a sec, did the bear move on? What was the end result here?

If he didn't have a bear tag he should have stood up, shouted and waived his arms much sooner. 99% of the time they'll just run off unless you're holding a sows cub.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

That last 1% will certainly make you think though.

Truth.. but on the plus side "killed fighting a bear with a knife" makes you sound like a badass in your obituary...

I was going for "Killed by a great white while spear fishing for giant yellowfin", myself, but I have to admit the bear/knife thing has a good ring to it.

wink

I definitely think I'd have a pistol with me...or I wouldn't be bow hunting.

I've came across several while out in the woods. My first when I was 16...just got my DL and was squirrel hunting with a .22 back where I'm from in East Tnn. Big bear came by about 20 yards from me. Never knew I was there ( and you can bet your arse I didn't want him to know I was there lol) I was elk hunting N.M. once and while going down a hill first thing in the morning an average size bear went straight across my path 10 yards below me...never smelt me (which to this day I don't understand...thermals go down in the morning)He stopped about 20 yards once past me and was digging at a log. I went down, got on the tail he took and went straight at him. Sneaked up within 10 yards and just watched him. He never knew I was there. No tag in my pocket either. I was Turkey hunting N.E. Tx on some public land (eastern turkey) and came across one sleeping in a blown over tree canopy. It did hear me and took off.

That guy should have stood up sooner and just waived his arms....bear would have turned and ran. He let it get to close to him.

A bear, even a small one, is absolutely the wrong thing you want to run into when it's having a bad day. Yes, 90% of the time (it's not 99%), they'll think about it for a second and then run off knowing humans are generally bad news, but that one that just isn't in the right mood is going to rip you into teeny, tiny pieces without breaking a sweat. They are ultra-strong and much faster than they look.

Google "bear cub vs mountain lion" if you want an idea of how much punch they pack. Or "baby polar bear vs man".

Not allowed to care a pistol in Canada.

It happens. It's rare with black bears (especially with no cubs involved) but it happens. Woulda scared the you-know-what out of me too.
