I had my 6.5 Creedmoor out today doing some load testing with the 143 ELD-X. After I got done I put up a 5-Dot target at 100 and went down prone shooting off the bipod with a rear bag. I used my standard Scenar 136L loads (that I haven't checked zero on in probably 2 months), basically I started the drill blind hoping everything was still on. I ran the drill fast, no timer, but I am pretty sure I was in under a minute. Missed the wind call on the first one (fairly gusty here today), but then settled in and shot pretty decent.

Hey, there you go!!! Nice work! Now, work on doing it in 20 seconds or less. Have a timer for it. 5 rounds in 20 seconds, really is not that difficult. You shoot your first round at the beginning of the buzzer, so say within a second. That leaves about 19 seconds for 4 rounds, or about 4.75 seconds each. If you plan to shoot the THF precision match on July 22, this will CERTAINLY be one of the stages! But the dots will be about 3/4".

Honestly, I don't know how fast I ran it. I would guess between 30-45 seconds.

July 22 I will be out of state at a family reunion, so that's not happening. wife

I'm more of a low speed high drag kind of shooter anyways. I like to get out and play at distance, but I wouldn't be very competitive. It would be fun to go play though, and meet a bunch of folks.

Jason and Chad are normally always very liberal with time they give. I normally let the clock get in my head. There has been more than once when I was shooting my gas gun that we had a minute and I finished with 45 seconds still on the clock and missed every damn thing.

in the Army we had to engage 40 targets from 3 different positions using open sights. Targets were between 50-300 meters and its timed. I think it was like 1 minute per stage pop up targets sometimes multiple targets at same time. The time factor bothered a lot of people never bothered me much I just seen a target and engaged. Many times I got 38 but never got all 40 usually bc I would miss a 200 and give it a follow up shot each target is only up for a few seconds. I could see how stationary targets like the 5 dot could get in your head quick with time burning off the clock, you miss a [censored] and start speeding everything up.

I like the technical aspects of precision shooting. But I'm getting older, too set in my ways, and time/stress starts jacking with me. I know it is a weakness, and one of the things I should be working on.

Well, if you shoot a .308" bullet at a .750" dot, you technically have 1.058" dot (.308"+ .750") to score a hit. 1 moa is 1.047" at 100 yards. So, a 3/4" dot is technically shooting at about a 1 moa dot. Oh, and maybe not everyone has a 1/4 moa rifle, but EVERYONE has a sub MOA rifle on the internet.... (and I'll add my favorite add-on line now)... if I do my part!

There's one complaint.

Now its a 5/8" dot.

I agree with this fully. And honestly, I don't really count #1 on my target as a hit. Yeah, sure, it meets the rules, but hear me out. At 100, you actually get the advantage of bullet diameter "hits" that you wouldn't get at distance. That same shot at 500 would have been a miss, since the actual center point of the bullet was not on target. #3 I count, because the center point of the bullet was inside the line, and that hit would have (maybe, depending on wind, and if my drop chart was dead nuts accurate) held up out further. At least theoretically it would, it wasn't a cheat hit just because the bullet was fat.

I know, that is a technicality. I do agree with the 3/4 dot if you are shooting for MOA and counting a "cut" as a hit though. The math on that works out pretty close.

I am an average shooter at best. I work at my shooting quite a bit, always try to make myself better, but don't BS myself about my capabilities either. Getting a rifle to shoot tight groups isn't really that hard. Getting it, and keeping it, dead nuts on target is much more difficult. Mainly because that part of the equation has to do so much with the shooter. Bad form, which I struggle with constantly, plays hell with a tight zero. Especially once you get into lighter rifles and heavier recoil. Sure, things like temperature can affect zero. But the shooter, their mindset that day (or how it shifts during the day), what they had for breakfast, what clothes they are wearing that day, all that stuff IMO has just as much to do with it. Some guys are just a freaking machine. Same thing, day after day, putting them right in there. Those are the guys who win comps. That isn't me. I fight it, I struggle with it. It takes lots of work for me to stay somewhat consistent.

BTW JG, what FD do you work at? You might have some tanks on your trucks that we built. I am Production Manager at Plas-Mac. We have fire tanks all over Texas, and the US. Lots of them down in your area.

Three things...

happy b-day Chad

Shooting a 1" dot has nothing to do with a 1moa gun...except you have a little better chance of hitting it. Saying you have a 1moa gun means you can shoot 1 moa groups...doesn't mean you know where they are going to go in the wind nuts

5/8 JHC...why don't you just go to a 1/2 grin

^^^ Exactly! The dot drill challenges you to control the consistency and get it onto the dot. You have to control 2 things- where you impact, and how consistent are those impacts at your desired target.

And thank you, Judd!!!

Good thread.

Happy Birthday Chad!

I think the 5-dot drill is a fantastic drill. I personally can't get that excited about small groups that miss their POA by a mile. It's fine to have an accurate rifle, but that rifle should also be able to hit what you're aiming at. I'll run my Tikka 223 through this next time out.

Are we allowed a few test shots in advance or is this drill supposed to be run cold when you first get to the range?

Check zero first. Adjust if necessary, let the rifle and shooter cool off.

Shoot it when you and the rifle are ready. In competition, we generally get 20 seconds to shoot it. In the THF hunting challenge match, we give 1 minute, which is a long time. In the precision match, it will be around 20-30 seconds time. IMO, 20 seconds is plenty of time.

I'll print a couple of these targets, and shoot it also next time I go out. I'll try to video it also.
