Hey guys- I am debating on getting the new pulsar trail 640 (the XP38 model) or the new core clip on which is a 384 sensor.
Obviously they are a bit different in use and application- I am running through my pros and cons list-

If you were me and debating between the two (cost aside) which would you pick and why-
Thanks in advance!

If you typically take your game 150 yards and in then go with the Trail as it poses less challenges in setting up and hitting your mark than a clip on.

If your shooting last 150 yards then the clip on has functional purpose that the trail (lower magnification) would not do as well.

Other than that both will serve as a benefit towards night hunting.

I believe the core has an optical adaptor to press it into service as a close range game spotter and game locator which is a plus.

Do yourself a favor and skip the Core. The XP38 is a much better option especially if you have a nice repeatable QD mount on your day optic. Give us a call to discuss if you like. Thanks

I would suggest the XP38 trail or save an additional $500 and get the XP50 Trail. The problem I see with the clip on is that it is not attached to the pic rail. It is attached to the bell of the day scope with a clamp mount. If you ever bump into it or knock it around you can lose your zero. I think a good qd mount on the Trail would have a better return to zero than the clip on when you take either of them off your rifle.

All the above comments are good to go. I would stick with the 640 cores for resolution especially at increased digital magnifications. I have been seriously considering the XP38 because of the terrain I hunt in. Personally I just prefer a wider FOV. Most of my shots are 100 yds and less but would not hesitate at taking a 200 yrd shot with the XP38. If you are hunting wide open spaces consider the XP50. At 100 yards each pixel of the XP38 is equal to 1.58 square inch in area. For the XP50 it will be 1.22 square inch in area. Another way of looking at this; place the XP38 and the XP50 side by side. Now take a hot object and place it 65 yards away from both scopes. Look at the object in the XP38's occular. You will now have to move the hot object to 85 yards away for it to appear the same size in the XP50's occular as it did in the XP38's occular at 65 yards.

UNV sells a quick detach that has been shown to be very point of impact repetitive. You have 3 reticle save positions so can use on multiple weapons. Everything is contained in one single package, no external cables needed.

Hope I did not confuse anyone with my rambling. Good luck and let us all know how it turns out.

I would definitely go with the 640 standalone. Clip on thermals add extra weight and with good QD mounts on the your thermal and on your day optic you can achieve the same result.
