Poor guy did know any better or needed cash fast.

Think he just didn't know any better. He left the $250 on table and said he'd take $300 store credit (pawn shop) and come back some time in the future and pick something up. Felt kind of sorry for the guy.

They have a book that they go by that tells them what to pay based on the condition of your gun. Typically, on a factory gun with reasonable demand, you will get roughly 30% less than what you could sell it for. You will come out even further behind if the gun has optics or any upgrades parts.

They aren't ripping anyone off, they simply need margin so they can make money when they sell the gun to someone else. Not sure why anyone would have a problem understanding that.

agreed, it's the way business is done, buy low and sell high, trading in is the same as taking it to a pawn shop but Cabela's does it with a smile

It's been my experience the employees there and especially Bass Pro don't know squat. They damn sure act they do though.

Some of the Gun Library people are incredibly knowledgeable and some are not. Just like any other business.

I recommend buying, but selling used guns to Cabelas. You can find great deals on their used guns and they'll come off the price that's marked.

I've taken a couple of guns in trying to trade up at Cabela's and never gotten an offer of more than half of the value of the trades. Not a slam, they have to carry the inventory and make a profit, I get that completely. Just not a good option.

On the flipside, I purchased a new O/U there a few years ago and had many problems with misfires. I took in to discuss repairs, and ended up being offered full retail price for it in store credit, which I flipped into a better shotgun. So, in this case, they did make things right for me through a trade.

I've had good experiences with their customer service and with folks in the bargain cave, just not so much on the gun library.

If you use Blue Book or MSRP as your pricing guide you will almost always be upset with offers from individuals or a business. Ive never understood people who get upset when they take something to a profit based business and expect to get what they can from a private sale or close to what they paid for it, it's just not going to happen and if it did those businesses wouldnt be around for long. There are a lot of variables that come into play when buying/selling used guns..caliber, inventory, condition, etc...I realize Im stating the obvious, lol. I dont trade near as much as I used too but I can tell you I rarely buy a brand new gun unless its a helluva deal, you just lose too much money on them if you decide to sell it.

I'll never buy a gun from Cabelas after they had marlin 336's marked at 600$, I asked the sales rep why the price had gone up on them and he said they have always been priced that high. I laughed, went to Academy, and bought the exact same gun for 400$.

Academy sells the 336W which is the lowest price 336. When I worked for Cabela's they did not sell the 336W, only the top end models. I doubt you were comparing apples to apples. Plus, if Academy was selling the exact model for less, Cabela's would have price matched if you asked.
