Hey all,
I'm a newer hunter looking to go on my first turkey hunt this year. Up until now I've used earth tones and mixed matched camo and makeshift blinds built on site. With what I've read on turkeys, I'm thinking I want to get a matching pants and long sleeve shirt set and possible head wrap. So a few questions:

1) What is the best camo pattern to "hide" me on public lands around DFW? Right now I'm looking at LBJ and Caddo, and I do some duck hunting on friends' private lakes.

2) Do I need matching camo for turkey, or any animals for that matter?

3) Would it be better to invest in a pop up blind?

Thanks for the help y'all!

For a new hunter, a pop up would be better for movement and concealment, next would be just natural cover bushes and trees to hide behind. Next would be the see through mesh on a few poles around your seat and lastly some type of camo.

I've used a Gillie suit before set up between some bushes, worked fairly well. Sit with Knees up rest shotgun on knees. If use pop up wear dark clothes, even black, keep netting closed on window except for gun or bow.

My humble opinion:

1. Any camo pattern will work. Animals see movement more than anything.
2. No, you do not need matching camo. Matter of fact, I specifically wear mismatching camo. I think if the pants are different from the shirt, which is different from the head covering, it does a better job of breaking up your outline.
3. A popup would be a good investment, but leaning against a tree will work too.

Happy Hunting, maybe I'll bump into you at Caddo!

Thanks for the opinions.

When it comes to color, my pants are more tans and browns - so I guess either desert and duck blind like, and my top is more of a hardwoods camo pattern. It looks kind of funny since there is such a color contrast which it what I'm also worried about. I guess a brush blind would help the color contrast, and then I need to get a head cover at minimum?

Agree with the Snake.

I fully intend on having my orange on for the hiking in and out. For turkey hunting though, won't wearing orange the whole day guarantee I don't have any turkeys come within range?

Turkey hunting on public land there is no way I'm wearing hunter orange. This is a deer state, not a turkey state. I've hunted the places you mentioned...you will be dam fortunate to see another hunter on one of those areas. The other...you will see horse riders more than anything.

Spring turkey hunting...pants...keep them brown and dark earth tones. Long sleeve shirt keep some green in it. I wear asap pants and predator green pull over shirts for all my turkey hunting. Any face mask will do. Any gloves will do. Any camo hat will do. Set up on a tree as wide or wider than you and that will do.

Great looking stuff, way out of my price range.

@BDB Thanks for the info - are you going out to LBJ for some turkey hunting this year?

Make sure to check your gear for reds and blues prior to hunting turkey on private land. For the same reason you don't snap a white handkerchief on opening day of deer season.

I'd recommend the face net and gloves in a hardwood pattern. You're lucky to have a huntable population.

One shot is all it should take.
