rofl Haven't seen no reports bout OSBWMA confused2 thar gotta be some one that's hunted it ... Never did the draw hunts, just archery deer-hogs, shotgun, rimfire,& blackpowder squirrel-hogs, & the 3month hog only any legal means.. Few early morning hog hunts in May...
It got primitive camp sites, cleaning station, do-it-yourself hunt... Usually has water in lower spots, used old tennieshoes held together with pvc glue or duck tape... It is some good hunting... flag

That was my bad... Think right now it's the hog hunts, any legal means, ends last day in March... Even the old atv trails are wet... They usdta send a booklet of all the WMA after buying the $48.00 public hunting permit, ask at Walmart... flag

cheers have put canoe in at 1804 (Hoard rd) when water flooded over road between two bridges & canoed ta 14, used my Topo USA ta trace miles, its 20+ miles... From 14 ta 155 its 8mile trip... Spent lots of time on that river, boat, canoe, kayak... Learned high spots for when river flooded the WMA.... Taken several hogs during the hog only hunts when it flooded by knowing high areas.... Have walked, pretty much from one end to other... scratch would probly be thar myself... Mostly park at camping áreas.... Thanks for update... Lots of gteat memorries....

My brother and I have a three-day hog hunt planned for that unit in a couple of weeks, we're gonna camp and hike, trying to spot-&-stalk. What's the visibility like out there? Is it really brushy, where you can only see short distances, or is it possible to see far out?

It gets thick in spots, bamboo, cane thickets whatever, but there is also lots of areas where the undergrowth is sparse. Sparse undergrowth is tough to deer hunt as there's not much to funnel the deer, but might be good for hog hunting.I've hunted the area a lot but not recently.

welcome ta the PLF, (Public Land Forum)...
This time of year the leaves off the trees so visibility should be good... As swampthing posted theirs áreas with lots of switch-cain, palmedo plants, & grassy weeds can get waist high... Can be tough turain ta move threw...
Lots of downed trees, can find hog & deer beds... Had pics of the hog beds found un the switch caín...
See that WF posted river is down, he has area only North side of Sabine River... He can give good info on stage of golosina... The whole 5,727 acres & every thing in between can look like a big lame, few areas little islands, if know were ta look...
Have found the spot & stalk worked best for me only hog hunts after archery done...
Any questions shoot a PM... The flooding pushes most most animals off, yet when goes down the hunting presser of surrounding privet land can make it a hot spot, cause of limited hunting... Best wishes... It does stay wet in areas... flag

wink Shhhhh, its a secret.... rofl Their might not be as many hogs as few years back... Have seen times when all along the old atv trails looked like some one plowed up & down both sides... During archery hunts wood set up off the trails at edge of thick areas litterly torn up... Never had hog come within bow range,.could hear em, see them from time ta time...
Hogs usualy move around more early-late hours, & night... Thats when majority of rooting, especialy along open trails is done... During the general hog, after the secreto is done that i do my walk-a-bouts, hitting the thick out of way areas, walking 5+ miles, had videos of hog beds & 1 were eased up on hogs while sleeping, in a thread, when they first put the public land section.. Walking is good exercise, my knee not able ta handle it know.. light back pack, cut down back, get back strap, peak hide around front $ back quarters, roll over & repete.... best way... although with threads bout poisoning, check meat first... Like land owners they want hogs gone too... stop in at office their, they got a Great Staff... Best wishes, & it does stay wet in areas... flag

cheers During hog only hunts i do lots of walking & hit the thick out of the way areas... Majority of the rooting up ya see is done at night... Years of archery hunting over out of way torn up areas teach ya that... Best luck i have is moving threw woods, finding fresh sign, then slow down eyes roaming...

Best wishes on hunt... flag

Had a great hunt out here this past week! What an awesome area! We drove out from Dallas on Tuesday morning, hit the woods later than we wanted, about 9am, and started in on the trails along the Sabine on the north side. We were moving too fast and too noisily at the start, and bumped a sounder in the first hour. Never saw them, but heard them moving away fast, obviously spooked. We didn't connect with any pigs on Tuesday, but we did get a squirrel in a weird circumstance. While walking down the trail, we came upon a juvenile squirrel playing possum, right in the middle of the trail. We walked right up to him, could clearly see him breathing, but no movement, no attempt at escape. I slipped the shell out of the chamber on my shotgun, and smacked him in the head with the buttstock, and he made a great appetizer for dinner that night, spit-roasted over coals with some Tony Chacheres for seasoning. About 45 minutes after getting the squirrel, somewhere between 2-3pm, we saw three whitetails, no obvious antlers, but maybe they had already shed.

We were sleeping in hammocks that night, and were NOT prepared for overnight temps in the low forties. I dozed and shivered until midnight before giving up and getting in the truck. My brother made it to 4am before joining me.

Wednesday morning we tried a different trail, running east, and found a small sounder about 8:30am. My brother was primary shooter, and as soon as he had a clear shot, he made a great miss on the big sow of the batch. He's still new to hog hunting, so I didn't tease him too hard on that. After his shot the pigs started milling around in confusion about which way to run, and a trio of little 20-30 pounders ended up trotting right towards me. They paused at about 20 yards, I nailed one, and then made three clean misses trying to pick up another as they scattered into the underbrush. A 1ounce 12-ga slug hits like the hammer of God himself, and dropped that first little pig in her tracks.

It actually worked out really well that I got a smaller pig, because I was able to quarter it up, cut the loins, tenderloins, ribs, heart, and liver out, pack everything in gallon ziplocks, stuff it all in my backpack, and keep on hunting. If my brother had scored too, we probably would have called it a morning, and packed them back to the truck, but instead we kept right on. We saw two more deer that afternoon, but never did catch up with any more pigs.

At the risk of letting the cat out of the bag on a great spot, I will say this: Go! Go there! If it's not unreasonably far away for you, don't miss an opportunity to hunt this place! There isn't a single square yard of dirt out there that doesn't have pig tracks or rooted-up holes. In two days we saw five deer with only minimal stealth in our movements. I didn't keep track of the amount of squirrels and rabbits we kicked up, but if small game is your thing you won't be disappointed here. The acorn crop was incredible last year out there, even now in March you could fill a five gallon bucket in one scoop. I can't even begin to imagine what such an abundant mast crop will do for the wildlife populations in the coming years. I've already got a second trip planned for May, and I might squeak in another trip between now and then.

FIFY... if ya was hunten on north side of sabine ya was on private land... sabine is North boundry, theirs few acres south of old sabine channel but land locked... If ya headed west, on trail close ta river, used to archery hunt an area, seen a yote caring baby hog threw woods, good area...
Thinking reason why WF posted: be looking for ya on trail cams...
Should be hog hunts going on now down their... Early morning hunts are the best... Safe hunting flag

Ya, North side is private and land owner will press charges for trespassing. South side is all yours!

No, we were on the south side of the river, just the north side of the WMA is what I meant.

I followed up on my plans to go back this past weekend, and had a delightfully miserable time. High eighties, ridiculous humidity, no breeze. Saw fifteen pigs all told, and didn't manage to bring a single one home. Hiked just over 11 miles, from my knees down is just one solid chigger bite, and I got poison ivy on my lower lip. I have no intention of going back until it cools down this fall.

Still a hell of a time!

Rub some white solid stick deodorant on them chigger bites, couple times a day. Most will stop itching, others will take a week. What do you drive, I will stop if I see you in the parking lot on 1804. Grant
