I have a hunt scheduled for the second week of November in Gregory SD. We have 3 of us booked, but I have concerns that at least one of the other guys is going to cancel. Hunting on a preserve, 5 birds per day. Lodging and lunch provided by the outfitter. We will be leaving Houston on Saturday, staying in York NE that night and driving into Gregory the next day. Hunt Mon-Wed, leave Wed after the hunt and drive back to York NE, spend the night and back home the next day. If interested, pm me.

Why would you drive that far to hunt on a preserve?

If you are actually hunting on what is called preserve land you can pay to shoot additional birds per day. Normally most of the banded birds are shot out by October and your actually shooting wild birds in November. I guess the pen raised are a little easier to hunt.

Kingwoodcat not sure who your hunting with but Stukel's is out of Gregory SD. and they are great folks.

I think he was asking why you would go that far to hunt pen raised birds when you can do that in Texas.

Bingo.

Pen raised birds in South Dakota become wild birds as soon as they are released.

"Pen raised birds in South Dakota become wild birds as soon as they are released."

That is what the "guide" says.

Gun's don't kill people. The Government does.

I killed eight gophers last year and a purebred Tennessee walking horse that was looking at me funny.

Thanks KingwoodCat for offering up this slot. If I was not already in Dakotas earlier for waterfowl, I would chase you down on this offer.

For those that have not driven through or around Gregory, SD in the fall, you will see more wild pheasants along the side of the road than you will see quail along the side of the road in west Texas. It is amazing. Additionally, there are some manicured farms in that part of South Dakota where deep cover, cut corn and milo are groomed specifically to hold pheasants. The bluffs in and around the Missouri river is something to behold.

Statistically, just as many rooster pheasants are harvested in South Dakota each year as there are mix sex quail harvested in Texas. South Dakota is more than a 1/3 smaller than Texas in land area. There are 1.1 million acres of public hunting.

If you have not hunted pheasants in South Dakota, it should be on your list. Choosing a lodge/preserve vs. public DIY is a financial choice.

Thanks again KingwoodCat.

Appreciate the kind words. Anytime you are using a guide in SD, he has to replace the birds killed. Wonder where he gets them from? Not to worry, one of my college roommates and I reconnected a few weeks back and he's in. We have 4 hunters and I think it would be even better shooting if we had 6, but I guess there are too many purists here. If your interested, pm me. If not, your loss.

Help me understand, if I hunt with a guide and his dogs or without dogs on public land or a private ranch (not a shooting preserve) he will have to replace the birds I shoot?

As I thought on hunting preserves, and yes they are replaced with pen raised birds.

Hold on there KCH. No one posted anything negative about shooting pen raised birds. Several, included me, had a problem with traveling 3,000 miles to do what you can do in Texas. Top Flight is an hour from my house and they will include quail with your pheasant hunt.

Maybe I just took it wrong, but there are quite a number of folks that find it objectionable. Fact is, if you hunt both, you can't tell the difference other than not having to worry much about hens. I'll give Top Flight a try, but to me part of the fun of hunting in South Dakota is the weather in the fall. I think that is one of the reasons I just can't seem to get into deer hunting in Texas. I grew up
In Missouri and the cool and sometimes cold weather is when you hunt. Hot weather is for fishing.
