For a long time I have wanted to go to Alaska, I have finally been given the opportunity. One of my really good friends knows someone in Fairbanks. We will be there in the first part of July. The plan is to do a little camping on the river along with rafting. Also trying to do a halibut fishing trip out of Valdez and go to Denali national park.

I am wanting to know really what I should be packing for that time of year in Alaska. Main thing is any suggestions on footwear. I usually just use my knee high Lacrosse rubber boots but never have to walk to terribly far for hunting purposes.

Thanks in advance guys.

A "THERMOCELL" sir. I have been there twice. The mosquitoes up there can be way worse than ours. You may want to pack a light to mid weight jacket for some of those early mornings, but as a rule, the weather is fairly nice that time of year. Mother Nature can be a "B...." when she wants to be, so keep that in mind. While there, we fished for halibut out of Homer and for salmon, we went to Seward. Keep a camera handy! Sea Otters, Eagles, and an occasional Whale will be there to entertain you on the coast and water. Moose stand on the side of the roads just like deer so you should see plenty of those as well. Good luck!

Alaska is awesome. Plan on cool mornings and evenings. And plan on rain. You'll get some every day. Everything gets damp...clothes, socks, shoes, hats. I would probably invest in a really good pair of waterproof, comfortable hunting/hiking boots vs. wearing rubber boots.

Comment above about the skeeters is spot on. Make sure you are prepared for those.

And have a good camera ready!

Been to Alaska 4 times, once on a DIY black bear hunt to Prince of Wales Island with great success and 3 other times for vacations. Also been to Denali and it is a fantastic place!

Make sure that any clothing you take is Goretex or waterproof and the same for footwear, must be Goretex or waterproof. Dress in layers as the weather will vary.

Have a great time!!

Definitely bring rain gear, waterproof pants and waterproof hunting boots, and buy them here. Everything in Alaska is EXPENSIVE. Denali is hit or miss, I went and it was extremely cloudy, never saw the mountain. You have to take a bus into Denali you can't drive. Most people only go about halfway in, but there's a lodge all the way at the end where you can get lunch, then fly back to the entrance. It's a whole day experience. You'll definitely see bears. Be careful walking in the woods in summer, I disturbed a hornets nest by accident with my fishing pole and learned a valuable lesson that day. Carry all your medicines and aspirin, benadryl, general first aid kit with you. Unlike the lower 48 help can sometimes be a long way away.

Try to get some salmon fishing in! That was my favorite part of the whole trip. Talkeetna is a great area to fish and explore. Bring a camera and extra battery and memory card.

Like others have said, good rain gear and comfortable waterproof boots should be a top priority. I have Frog Toggs pants and jacket, but after using them last year I'll probably be getting something else. I just don't like the material because it's stiff and papery (if that's a word) feeling. I also agree with buying as much as you can here. I don't know what it's like on the mainland, but on Kodiak Island the prices are absolutely insane. Oh, and taking a slower friend in case of bears doesn't hurt either. grin

Thanks again for all of the advice. I did pick up some irish setters that were 40% off that I think will work fine. I have looked at the frogg toggs and I also dont care for the way they feel. Going to be picking up some rain gear soon and also a good hunting back pack. Something that is big enough for one night ahould be fine. I have been needing one anyways. So if there is any advice on hunting packs and rain gear brands let me know. I have been looking at badlands for the pack and columbia for the clothing.

Trying to book the fishing trip in Valdez currently. I am really excited about that. Cant wait to pull in a big ol halibut.

I just bought this pack after figuring out last year mine was woefully inadequate. It has some really nice features and I think it's going to work much better for me this year. There is plenty of room to pack all of my stuff including extra clothes, and there is an expandable area to assist with packing out meat. There are so many options for backpacks you could lose your mind looking at all of them.

I have several Badlands packs and think they are great. If you only need a one day pack I would pick the Pursuit, if you need more gear I like the Super Day Pack. Both are top quality with a lifetime guarantee. I also have a 2200 if I need to take my spotting scope while hunting out west.
