I am curious as to what yall would suggest for someone who is looking for a gun dog that does not shed too much. I wear black the majority of the time and dog hair tends to stand out. I am thinking of getting a dog to train as a gun dog, primarily for doves, though i am also getting into ducks and geese. I also plan on this dog being a house dog. Maybe this is not something most worry about, but i am just starting to look around at different breeds and am curious as to what would be suggested for a breed that does not shed too much. Thanks for any help!!!

Simple, buy a field bred black cocker spaniel. Best dove dogs I have ever seen.

All dogs shed. Standard poodles shed less than most. Poodles are retrievers, a black standard would be large enough to handle geese. However, you need to be very careful with any dog dove hunting because of the heat. A big flight on a hot day and an excited dog is a dangerous combination. (when I dove hunted, I would carry a wash tub into the field for the dog and put enough water in it for the dog to get itself wet. Or, you can take a ice chest or water cooler with cool water and a sponge.

Vizsla, hair is so small you can't see it
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

I am enjoying all of yalls suggestions. I understand that all breeds shed at least a little, thats why i mentioned low shed. I already have a chocolate merle american cocker spaniel at home that to me doesnt seem to shed too much. How old is too old to train a dog in the basics of retrieving? My cocker spaniel is going to be turning 5 in July and seems to like to retrieve small things like a tennis ball, but i never really got around to trying to train him to retrieve something i shot. Any suggestions at to how to go about doing it for a complete novice? i am still kinda thinking i should have jumped on a puppy i saw listed online that was a Chessie/Lab mix.

I have a german wire haired pointer (similar to Drathaar), they are versatile gun dogs. Mine is a great pointer and ok retriever at this this point (11 months old). He's a low shedder and loves car rides and being part of the family. Contrary to what I read from some forums, he get along well with all dogs and is not aggressive. However, he is very athletic and loves to hunt, run, jump, and play as most pointers do. The wirehaired pointing griffon looks very similar to the wirehair and dratthaar, but is not from the same genetic line. Griffon's are a bit hairier but are reportedly calmer and hunt closer to foot. If dove and duck hunting, I'd look in that direction. My wirehair will outrun a horse or atv when out pointing. It's nothing for him to cover a 400 acre lease in a hunt. I have to make him hunt under foot. That's a big difference in deciding your breed, believe it or not.

If the dog likes to retrieve you can probably teach it to do what you want it to. Despite the myth, old dogs can learn new tricks. For your purposes a book like game dog will get you headed in the right direction. YouTube will also have a lot of info on basic training.

Vizsla, hair is so small you can't see it I have two hunting buddies that are Vizsla guys. I am constantly amazed by how little hair comes off of them. They are also notably low odor, even when wet. I cannot even find hair on their bedding.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Pudelpointers are really nice dogs and in enough demand that they pretty much only go to the homes of serious hunters.

Not a GSP either. Short hair but sheds like crazy.

Vizsla, hair is so small you can't see it Yeah that's what I heard when I got mine. Trust me, they shed. Mine also rubs his body in your legs and furniture like a cat leaving hair everywhere.
