I got a chance to test (and am still testing) some new 6.5 Grendel Cavity Back MKZ 118 gr. bullets. In the mean time, my folks are having a problem with some beavers again. So while I had hogs in mind for field testing, looks like a beaver is giving me my first look at the damage the bullet will do. It produced a very nice, well defined, permanent wound cavity.

As with previous beavers, I break open the dam (now having a spot set up for them) and wait for the beaver to come back to repair it...

Very cool! Glad you got him. That cavity back certainly looks like a deadly bullet for this application, as well as just about any other soft-skinned varmint/vermin. Be interested to see how it does on the tough hides of the bristly beasties you hunt!

Not sure I understand. Why is the beaver a problem?

Most folks have to pay significant money to build a pond and the beaver is doing the work for no charge.

Seems like the free pond is beneficial.

No being critical, but would appreciate some more info.

Had similar experiences with beavers going under like that. If you don't kill them they will go down and die, then float up an hour or so later.

Because of all the damage they do to trees. Especially young trees that were planted with the intention of harvesting for $$.
Dealt with this a lot at my family's place.

If you like your natural trees near the creek, beaver are a problem in that they will kill those tree by cutting them down. The trees are used as food by the beaver and for dam building materials. The beaver, if left unchecked, will denude the local landscape of trees. In my folks' place, the beaver have traveled in excess of 100 yards from the creek to may parents' yard, cut down, and dragged away several fruit trees. Granted, they were small fruit trees, only a few years old, but a few years of expense and effort lost as a result.

Yep, people pay good money to have ponds built. We have 2 on the property plus the spring fed creek. What you won't find people paying good money to have beaver come in to build ponds for them.

They will cut down a tree that took ten years to grow in less than an hour.

And they don't stop at one tree …
