Doesn't look good, but does look sandy. Sandy soil often recovers faster than other soils because rain percolates so well thru it. This is why Falfurrias is such a good area.

Where is that? We have seen some awful areas up there over the years due to the cattle guys. Just down the road it is good.

There are a lot of variables. Were there birds there before it was drought stricken and overgrazed? Is there good habitat nearby? If you used this pasture in the past, did it hold pheasants or quail or both? Is there any roosting cover in this pasture? Is it still being grazed, or have all the cattle been taken off? IE. If there is good habitat nearby, if the soil is sandy, if there is still roosting cover, a good rain on sand could bring back grass in months and birds shortly thereafter. With clay, no nearby habitat and no roosting cover and continued overgrazing it may never hold birds.

fire covered thousands of acres, it takes continuous rains in tbe sand hills, one rain does not fix the problem, do you see any roosting cover? that's what it looks like for miles...

yep, I am old enough to remember the after math of the dust bowl, my folks lived through it, remember Dad telling it would get so dark during the day the chickens would go to roost.

Right now its 39 degrees in Dodge City and raining, by Tuesday it will be 65 and sunny. That April and May sun angle will rapidly get the vegetation growing fast again. Down the road in Spearman, Texas it is now 35 degrees.
We have to also look at the bright side of this weather "Abundant Moisture". Texas/Oklahoma panhandles and Kansas is getting greatly needed moisture. The rain and snow mix captures nitrogen molecule while falling and acts as natural fertilizer. With greener vegetation (green healthy wheat) and enormous quantities of plant nutrients full of minerals/vitamins and more insects. We need fat healthy hen quail and pheasants to lay lots of healthy eggs. I think Dimmitt, Texas received over five inches of rain in April. This rain should pay off in more nesting cover and plant nutrients and fat insects.
With a weak El Nina coming on this summer we should look good by August and Sept.
