Biologist are setting up feeders of their own on our place to do a Tick fever survey. I didn't get a chance to speak with the biologist. I believe there were a few cows down the road from us that died from tick fever last hunting season. Just wondering what's their plan?

most dont know it but mice are the biggest carrier of ticks.

When I did the archery hunt down at Laguna Atacosa NWR last November, folks from the FDA were doing tick surveys on everything that was brought into the check station. We had to wrap the animal in a tarp before loading it into a vehicle. We were also required to freeze any part that we wanted to keep that had some hide on it. They are now doing helicopter culling of the nilgai in an attempt to control the tick.

Wonder if they are doing this all over the state? And is the research mostly from the prospective of getting info about Lyme Disease?

The ticks have been bad at our place since last hunting season. We haven't been down to the place where at least someone in the group hasn't gotten a tick on them. Last year I quit bow hunting because even with OFF etc. I was still getting multiple ticks on me every hunt.

No it has nothing todo with Lyme. it's actually Rhipicephalus. This is about ag safety more then deer or nilgi. It's TAHC and Feds not TPWD. They had additional positive outside quarantine area. Lots of deer about to get ivamec laced corn.

Yep. The main reason Laguna Atascosa NWR is waging war against the fever tick is the surrounding ranches are in danger of not being able to sell their cattle. I recently spoke with a TPWD biologist at a local WMA about this. His opinion on the best way to control the tick is to allow cattle treated with a pesticide to graze in the affected area. Like Bobo said though, it's not a TPWD issue. The feds are running the show.

Used to be a big problem down on the Rio Grande with cows moving back and forth across the river and spreading tick fever. I wonder how much more Ivomec laced corn will be price-wise? I also wonder what other type of benefits the deer will reap from this study?

According to the rancher, Tick Fever doesn't harm deer mostly live stock.

So deer just help transport the ticks around, but don't suffer from tick fever symptoms? And the reason deer are targeted in these studies is the biologist are trying to cut out some of the middle men in getting the ticks to the cattle?

I'm guessing their strategy is to put out corn with something in it that remains in the bold long enough to kill the ticks that attach to deer. I know their putting out six corn feeders on our place, and we have 13 of our own that are throwing corn now but its not medicated, they may ask us if they can shutdown some of our feeders to concentrate the deer to their feeders.

So have I redchevy, I can go in the field with 10 people and I'll be the only one to have a tick on me at the end of the day. They must like my stinch.

Last time bow hunting I got bit by a few on my legs. Had some itchy red patches show up for a few days... freaked me out a little but they went away... I don't like doctors. When the off wasn't enough to keep them away I just quit bow hunting.

We had a grass fire a few years ago, talk about a silver lining in everything. We lost lots of deer blinds etc, but I didn't see a tick for seemed like 2 years.

They say if you take garlic tablets it will stop ticks from be attracted to you. I'm not a fan of doctors or a pill regimen. The situation begs the question ''What did the Indians do for tick repellent''?

Cattle tend to stay in one pasture. Nilgi and Deer not so much.

This study has been going on for 20 years. Most recently they where getting positive hit where they shouldn't. For the longest time it was thought that ticks would not attach to nilgi. They recently found that false in some cases.

Fever Ticks Detected on a New Premises in

Live Oak County CPQA











Austin, TX - Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) confirmed fever ticks on a new premises within the established Live Oak County Control Purpose Quarantine Area (CPQA) on March 16, 2017. With the new premises, there are now nine infested premises in the CPQA.




As part of routine surveillance conducted in the CPQA, cattle on the new infested premises were undergoing a second TAHC inspection when the fever ticks were disclosed. The initial inspection of the premises in December did not show a fever tick infestation.



"Finding a new infestation now is concerning but not surprising," said Dr. Andy Schwartz, TAHC Executive Director. "We anticipated and planned for this, and continue heightened surveillance as fever ticks move from winter dormancy to spring hatch, with favorable climatic conditions for the fever ticks."




Premises located within the CPQA are subject to movement restrictions, systematic inspections and potential treatment in accordance with the regulations in Title 4, Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 41 Fever Ticks.




The TAHC continues to conduct epidemiological investigations related to the detection of fever ticks in the area, as well as ticks that may have been moved on cattle, horses, and exotic hoofstock shipped from infested premises. As part of this investigation, the TAHC will notify affected producers and inspect their livestock to ensure these exposed herds are fever tick free.



If you see ticks on your animal(s) that you believe could be fever ticks contact your private veterinary practitioner, TAHC region office or USDA personnel to have the animal(s) inspected.

The federal Government actually has guys called tick riders. Fun Government job to ride south Texas brush all day. Probably the only true cowboy job in the world with a retirement package

correct, study done in the eastern U.S. shows that where coyotes took out the fox population (that's why I give fox a pass) the tick fever runs rampant

Pour sulphur in an old sock and slap it around on your jeans. You can stay out all day tick free.

They set up 6 feeders, boss buck with the protein tube but filled with medicated corn. They went all out, round feeder pens, staked the feeder down and everything. Hoping to inherit at least the feeder pens.
